Spartanburg miniature railroad crash - update

garrett- the 24 hour news cycle means you hear about a lot of stuff you never would have in the past. They have to fill the space. Add to that the huge lawsuit payouts which also attracts readers/viewers....

Remember that annoying '80s song “Dirty Laundry”? (Don Henley mebbe?)

I am sure a part of that is true. Another example is the teacher/student seductions that get TV coverage now. A veteran teacher told me that “back in the day” whenever a female teacher was caught with a student, they were tranfered to another school and nothing was said, and it went on as much or more than it did today. A male teacher exposed himself to my mother’s band class in the 1950s, nothing was done or said. If it happens today…

But, a quick check on google shows such accidents back into the 1930s… buried in the back pages of newspapers.

I don’t watch TV that includes local news, I also refuse to read the local paper…local talk radio is getting pretty useless too-don’t need those means of information gathering, I do own a hair salon and get fed tons of news on a daily basis.

Truth: SC State Inspector failed to inspect and signed off.

Truth: Engineer/Driver admitted to increasing speed every lap from 1 to 3. Also admitted he knew he was going to fast. Stated to local authorities that he wasn’t sure he could live with himself if any of the children died.

Truth: there are no REAL guardrails around the track, just 36" chain-link fencing except at both trestles, where there is NO railing.

Truth:The Roadbed is as “flat” as you’d expect, there are no dips or hills anywhere on the line, and there haven’t been as long as I can remember, I’ve ridden that train every year it’s run since my birth in 1973 (train was shut down for a few years, a while back). I remember some considerable washing between the ties.

Truth: the Train and Locomotive “shifted” and “binded” as it traveled around the track most especially in the curves. The cars would “rock” back and forth the entire trip, even on the straights.

Truth: I don’t think I’ll ever look at anything as benign again-

Truth: it is a true wonder that my kids and I weren’t on the train that day-

Opinion: I can believe it would and prolly did tip if going too fast. to make it worse, it would tip to the right as following the curves through, it’s also on the right that you enter and exit the cars-with just an opening-I can imagine small children ejected from their seats Very Easily.

I did not read any of the above links, my connection is too slow, spent the time waiting to post here.

whomever posted this picture as ‘news’ should have their Journalistic Licenses revoked! Nothing could be further from the truth! Gimmie a break! Photoshop at it’s worst!

One photo is tagged Charleston…former “Capital” city but about 3 hours away from Spartanburg on the Atlantic Coast.

Taken from a vantage point that is no less than 40’ above, it appears the track runs downhill going into curve-it does not.

Hey guys,

Here is a video that may come of interest to you-
It’s a little heart-wrenching to watch especially knowing the outcome…

Matt

Does seem to have been going rather faster than mini train rides I think of.

I’d have to agree with Tom, looks to be going pretty fast for a train ride.

Running tests now to reconstruct the accident.

My first born on left of photo, nephew on right, you can see the door opening on the cars. this photo was made last summer. seat was formed metal built into body of car.

So you blanked out their faces 'cause they were making rude faces at Dad and his camera?

nah, it was a beautiful smile, but I don’t allow photos of my kids on the net…just ask my dad he’s still pi__ed about having to remove their pics from his Facebook

In the past there were a few here and there but since then I’ve come full stop on the practice.
