Spammers, etc

Hey folks
A few things regarding spammers and the like. First, the Wiki has been the target of a huge spam campaign over the last 10 days or so. I’ve added some protection to the code to slow that kind of crap down. So, if you experience problems editing/creating content on the Wiki, let me know.

Second, there have been an increasing number of bogus ‘new user’ requests that Ive seen. I’m currently working on the new user code and the profile code to make it more secure. Stay tuned!

Hey Bob,

Aren’t those guys a “delight”? Grrrrrrrrrrr

Personally I think there needs to be more information required in people’s profile. Currently all they need is a name…nothing else.

I might also suggest that the initial log in password be sent to a verifiable email addy.

Warren,

It all depends.

This is how I handle it on the RhB Forum

email request arrives

Reg form gets sent (looks like this):

First Name: Last Name: 1st email address: 2nd email address: Location: Occupation:

What are your interests in Swiss railways and the Rhaetian Railway:

What scale do you model:

On which other fora do you participate:

It is more work but it sorts things very nicely. For every three requests that receive a Reg form, I get one returned Reg form.  What does that tell you?
On the RhB WIKI it’s members only, keeps things straight.

The way the signup has worked for the last bit (year, maybe a bit more), is that when you sign up, you have to provide a verifyable email address. I send your temp password to it. You wouldnt believe the bounces I get, people screwing up their own addresses.

I need a way to make SURE that you’ve entered your password correctly. Probably have them enter it twice or something.

I’m going to require more info as well, to stem this kind of garbage.

How about a verifing code your have to enter, you put code, as a graphic, on the screen for the new user to enter correctly to verify you are a real person, not a spam machine.

I like it when ordering merchandise. Keeps the computer spammers away.

I have to put my glasses on to see that stuff and they are usually buried under a bunch of papers on my desk.:stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve tightened up the new user code a bit, to take certain things into account that I have been seeing lately.
