South Carolina trip

My wife and I are planning to spend the holidays in Charleston, South Carolina. We will be driving and plan to break up the drive from Fort Washington, Pa. by stopping overnight somewhere in the south of Virginia or the north of North Carolina. Is there anything of interest railroad-wise down that way ?

A little out of your way is Roanoke VA with O Winston Link and VA Transportation Museums.

In one of the Carolinas is a shop that restores live steam locos.

Probably Spencer, NC but I cannot find my reference to it.

I don’t really recall a lot around the Charleston area. Been there quit a few times and will be there also first week in Dec Johns Island camp ground for the Christmas displays. Later RJD

The North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer would be your best bet.

The N&W 611 was “restored” at Spencer.

NCTM is the old Southern steam repair shops. Lots of motive power and rolling stock on display. Nice Roundhouse and Turntable.

The big “Backshop” has been restored. But none of the old repair equipment is there.

They may or may not be running trains on the property. I’m not sure of the Winter schedule. Check the web-site.

A friend and I just installed an over head layout in the gift shop at North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer. About 200’.
