I am looking for some scale wire mesh that has about a 2" scale hole (1:29). To be absolutely prototypical it is the overlapping welded wire kind, but I won’t be that picky. this is to replace the stock screen in the USA trains GP7/9 with something more prototypical. Here is the HO Version by Plano and I want to do basically the same thing.
have a look at window screening. there are some from metall and some from plastic. and (here at least) i have seen different sizes of the holes.
edit; if you need even smaller, look for water filter material.
Actually I would need bigger at least for the window screen I have next to my work bench. It is too fine. However you did give me a thought. I wonder what the fiberglass dry wall tape would look like, I have some of that at home as well. That has a larger mesh size.
Edit: Looking at Home depot’s website they do make all sorts of sizes and style of screen. that may work.
Amazon has all sorts of brass wire mesh. Hard to tell from the pictures what size I need. Anyone have an idea? If I say it is a 2" mesh in 1:1, and I am guessing on that, then that comes out to .07. I can get .06 and .07 mesh from amazon. So i might have solved my problem. Would people agree that the screen on a GP9 is about a 2" mesh?
Maybe Plastruct? I got my diesel diamond plate decking from them.
Devon, I got enough of this stuff to last several lifetimes…if it looks right, or you want to try it out, just let me know. For that matter, anybody else that could use this, just let me know and I’ll send you a sheet.
Maybe a trade is in order? i don’t need a whole bunch maybe you can send it my way and i can play with it. But before you do i will go look at it, isn’t that used for cross stitch or whatever its called?
Sounds crazy (most of what I say is crazy) but… maybe the material from a metal kitchen strainer? Just a thought.

That might actually be a good idea. Not sure how cost effective but if I can pick them up a a thrift store or the dollar store. I actually like that idea. And lets face it that is just my sort of thing.
Yes, that plastic mesh is for cross stitching. I found some in a brownish colour one time and bought it. If the mesh doesn’t actually have to be metal, you could look at some of the lace fabric (SHUT UP ROOSTER) and lace ribbon at the craft or fabric store.
Also I got some fine stainless mesh screen at a paint supply store one time. Its for filtering paint before its pumped into a sprayer. But its way too fine for what you are trying to do.
Here is the prototype. It is a woven wire mesh. To me it looks about 2" holes. While it doesn’t have to be metal it does have to be somewhat rigid. Already looked at the fiberglass tape and while the whole size looks decent I think it will be two flimsy. They cross stitch mess I am afraid will be to heavy a wire.
I am thinking at this point of trying the cross stitch stuff if I can talk John out of some and also buying brass wire mesh from amazon.
The above mesh is this:
and can be found at craft stores.
The above on the other hand is fabric, somewhat stiff, used in floral decorations or to make sachets by some, again available in the craft stores in the same area as the plastic cake columns.
Maybe they will help(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
That’s the stuff you want there, Devon…good call Marconi…I’m heading down to the store this weekend to get some of that contour mesh. The plastic stuff I have is rather crude looking compared.
McMaster Carr is an online industrial supplier, they have everything from micro fine through that two inch stuff in nearly any metal you could want. Prices are not unreasonable nor are minimum quantities, though the minimum would do a lot of scale locomotives!..oh and they have all kinds of stuff beyond that!
David,
Both of those wires look great. I am glad you showed the one in the top picture because I saw that online and wasn’t sure but on your train looks great. The other stuff looks equally good. Now I know where to at least start
Eric I will check them out as well I think I have been to their site before.
Thanks both of you.
Gents, I host my pics on Photobucket for the most part.
Saying that, I noticed today that my photo links on this posting showed as broken links. I decided to check the photos on Photobucket directly and re-post them. The pic links on Photobucket were all broken. I reloaded Photobucket a few times and finally the pics re-appeared, and once they did they were back in my posting. Maybe this info will shed some light on the pic problem.(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
I was never not able to see them. And I looked at them several times. That is somewhat strange though.

I want to thank eric for turning me onto McMaster-Carr Not only do they have some perfect prototypical wire mesh for our hobby they also have al sorts of things we might need just as he said. Great site for all sorts of stuff big and small.
