Soundtraxx Sierra Battery

Does anyone know how long to leave the battery plugged into the wall charger so it does not overcharge or do I just leave it in overnight? I lost my instruction booklet. I had to replace the rechargeable battery yesterday. It is a SHAY soundsystem,

thanks

Scott,

Overnight should suffice…

You can calculate the actual need to some degree based on state of discharge by noting the chargers specifications, the mAh rating should be listed on the device. Together with the known battery capacity simply divide the battery mAh capacity by the chargers charge rate for a time factor.

example; 1.5Ah battery / 60mAh charge rate = 25 hours. 1.5Ah = 1500mAh

Scott,

I assumed you replaced the original Sierra gel cell battery with a like gel cell battery.

It matters not what battery chemistry is used to calculate a charge time factor for the most part, although there are some caveats therein. Gel cells are generally trickle charged, the chemistry of these cells will allow some over charge without detrimental consequences realized of other battery chemistry/technologies.

I leave mine over night all the time. But I don’t have to do it very often. I also replaced most of my Sierra batteries with a larger, more amp hour battery I found on ebay. They really don’t need to be charged very often. I moved a year and a half ago, and didn’t run anything for a year. All of those batteries were still charged. One of the original Sierra batteries in an RS3 has died. So my question is what gel cell battery would I use.

The danger of larger batteries is that it can affect the charging circuit.

I’d match the original voltage and amp hours.

Greg

Of course I matched the voltage, but I went up in amp hours. If I run them regularly, they stay charged, and I never have to charge them. I can’t tell you the amp hours because they are inside the engines, but it is more than the original battery that came with the Sierra system. They are junk. Almost every one I have has died. I have a dead one in an RS3, which I can’t put the larger battery in because of size. That’s why I was asking about alternatives, like the mentioned gel cells.

Paul, you asked what you would use, and you have little space.

You say you have success with higher amp hours.

I’d get on line and look for ones that fit, in the amp hours you “believe in”.

I have ordered a lot of gel cells from these guys: http://www.zbattery.com/

Scott,

Mine was dead, I had to leave it plugged in about two days. I didm’t think it would take a charge but it did.
