Soundcards that can import Custom recordings

Hi everyone, sorry if this has been asked before, but I can’t seem to find the topic in the search engine.

Anyway, I was wondering what sound systems are there that provide the ability to install custom recorded sounds. The reason I’m asking is because I can’t seem to find a RTR unit that sounds exactly like an Australian steam train.

I know there is Mylocosounds and I am using one for the moment, but I’m feeling less satisfied about it and interested to see what else is out there.

These might be of interest for experimenting…Cheap!

A number of UK modellers are using them.

The UK GARDEN RAIL magazine for December carries an article about them and the Jan issue will carry an article on how to build a simple PCB module to alter the tracks of an SD card from one sound to another. Diesel ticking over to running up etc…

Download your own sounds with a suitable audio prog.

Master Blaster looks like one of those mini mp3 player/speaker combos that are all over Amazon and Ebay ), but with a suitable sound effect loaded on the micro-SD card.

For example, this kind of thing:

or this one which is a bit more expensive (and out of stock)

Zimo does have the ability to have custom sounds, Axel has done a bumble sound for the egg liner. The zimo is a motor/sound/light pulsing smoke controller and is programmable.

Sound programming was asked but does the user need sound only units or full featured decoder?

Relating this to the Speeder thread (and–coincidentally–the “hit and miss engine” thread), I’ve had it “on the books” to do a model of one of the EBT’s hit-and-miss speeders for some time, with my first thought to be to do something to what Ross suggested using a recording I made while riding on the EBT’s speeder. I figured at the time I was contemplating this project that the speeder would likely be something I’d just sit on the track for fun, so there’d be no need to control its speed.

However, with the advent of Airwire’s “Convertr” receiver, I could possibly use a Zimo (or similar) DCC decoder with a user-programmable sound (using the aforementioned recording I made) for the motor, and add the ability to actually control the speed remotely. Could be fun.

Later,

K
