Large Scale Central

Sorry, I have to leave for an hour or so....

The United States Social Security System just called me alerting me to “an impending enforcement action against me.” Fortunately if I go to my bank and wire transfer $2,842.56 to the wire location provided the action against me will be terminated.

(Actually, I feel sorry for the old people whom they prey on and who fall for this ******* stupid ****)

Well, darn, John. I was counting on that money to buy some new train stuff (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Yup, my mom got a phone call along those lines. She just hung up. I hope she never falls for those scams.

I just received a note telling of a diplomatic currier, who will be visiting me with $10,000,000 in bank notes in two sealed containers, that I can keep, but I must not tell the currier, or anyone else what is in the sealed containers…all this from someone in Nigeria, named Collins. He claimed to be a friend of someone in NY, that trusts me…I just have to send my proof of identity to him.

How long should I wait ? I’m counting on the cash, so I can finance the owner of this web page, so that he can find time to drop in once and a while, and chat.

Good for you. Enjoy you good fortune, . . . . (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Fred, I see problems. First of all 10,000,000 in Nigerian bank notes is probably worth only about $30 or $40 in Canadian money. Second, how do you know the message wasn’t from Bob McCown just pretending to be from Nigeria and using Collins as an alias? Finally, I wouldn’t trust anyone with friends in New York…ha ha ha just kidding you New Yorkers.

I have had this “free money” thing happen several times. One time the guy emailed me, I sent some (bogus) information, and he said he was going to send instructions.

At this juncture, they normally do not send you money, but ask for more information or something else.

When he called back, I told him thanks so much, I already received the money, and bought a new house and car. He went nuts. I kept maintaining that I had indeed received the money and was so happy.

He finally blew a gasket, and said “you f**ing Americans, you think you are so smart”, and I gave him the phone number and address of the regional FBI office and told him to call them with his offer.

Never heard back… it was pretty funny to have him lose his cool when he actually believed I got some money…

Greg

Being a Treasurer of a busy Parish I try to be very alert to scam mail. phone calls and letters. At home, the usual ISP, bank, etc calls get ignored. However the diocese, a while ago, sent me a few emails from someone with a Nigerian name. Being cautious - well when it is other folk money it is wise to be extra cautious - I deleted the mail instantly. After some weeks, it was revealed that one of the new staff in the Finance section was Nigerian. However, it was accepted as a safety step on my part. Lately I’m getting emails from my ‘ISP provider’, telling me my CC is bad. The graphics are good enough to cause confusion, but my bank statements reveal their deception.

It does make me pause.

I hate the internet sometimes.

What happened to the good old days when real American “entrepeneurs” would ring your doorbell and try to scam you into a new roof, or try to get you to buy a crappy vacuum you didn’t need and which wouldn’t work for more than an hour anyway. Remember when some slick guy would come in your living room and throw dirt and stuff on your carpet and show you how well his vacuum cleaner worked?

Whatever happened to the Fuller brush guys? If I remember right they were the blind guys? Now there’s an angle.

I long for the days when good hard-working guys conned little old ladies into down payments on work they’d never accomplish. (Okay they still do that, to everyone in fact, in fact the gullible population is including younger and younger people now it seems to me–it’s just that now the dopes whine and complain endlessly about it on Nextdoor, Facebook, and anywhere else they can reach from their keyboard.)

Okay, this has nothing to do with trains and I better stop before Bob or one of the brethren slaps me down!

Well, just to prove to myself that those emails are false, I hover my mouse pointer over the link. The URL then appears at the bottom of my screen. Some of the URLs are actually quite funny. None of them are the actual institutions I deal with.

I usually tell the phone scammers to “Foxtrot Oscar”…(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

I thought you Brits say “Bugger Off!” (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Oh no…I had fun with a phone scammer one night. I don’t think she ever worked so hard in her life. She ended up getting nothing…but a hard time.

Way back in the day, before there was caller ID and NO robocalls, I got one guy trying to sell me a new long distance service. I told him “Sorry, but I don’t have a phone”. Wow, was he ever confused!

Well, it all depends on what they look like. And on the phone, I can’t tell.
