Hi All;
One of our local radio stations, Q99, has had a “most unusual job” contest as its first contest of the morning. The ninth caller has to remember the most unusual job from the previous day, then tell about his/her most unusual job. Today I got to be the ninth caller, and told about being the outlaw on the Dry Gulch Railroad at Hershey Park. I won some meals at a local barbeque restaurant.
The job started in May of 1965, and I only was the outlaw for about a month and a half, then I got promoted to conductor. As conductor, I learned how to fire and eventually run the Crown Metal Products 4-4-0 that was our “prime mover.” By the time I learned those skills, I was really deep into this hobby.
Too bad I couldn’t top my Dad. Not too many folks can claim that their daddy was a kiss inspector. The DJs were pretty sharp. They guessed right away that it was at the chocolate factory. Dad’s first job at Hershey Chocolate required him to wear white cotton gloves and pick out the kisses that did not get wrapped in foil. The unwrapped kisses were then recycled through the production line.
Anyway, fun stuff - and not the ordinary “Joe Jobs.”
Best wishes,
David Meashey
