Some New cars added to the roster RGSNH

While i did not document the builds on these two new cars i did want to share the results:

This first car RGS 2102 was a C&S Refrigerator car converted to work service circa 1940 by the RGS. it was made of laser cut wood for the most part, similar to the refer to the right. the major difference is that the side and end ladders are now 3d printed, along with the stirrup steps and most of the other details, including the brake wheel.

The second Car is the result of extensive research done back in 2023 for Stan. i am still working on his version. My version uses scale wood. I was able to 3d print the angles and channels to scale thicknesses, but had to break up into four pieces. On the side sills the joint is hidden by the stake pockets, and the center sill pieces by a plate. i also modified the ends of the truck bolster by replacing the bolted on piece with one more appropriate, again 3d printed. even the grab irons are 3d printed.

Beautiful work, Al.

Are you using the “Tough” resin still, or have you found something even better?

Cliff,

Yes, but a new formulation. i am finding it a little more difficult to work with on the support side of things. it is now black instead of grey.

Doing your own decals and trucks?

Cliff, I had a decal set for the 6200 series flat car from San Juan decals, and the RGS 2102 decals are one of the last sets i had Stan Cedarleaf make.

i do something that others shy away from. i use lacquer thinner to dissolve the decal film. I use a small brush and work carefully in the right light. once it looks good i then follow up with an over spray of the thinner. then i can scratch with fiberglass brush to distress.

the trucks on the flat car are from the bachman framed tank car. i changed the bolster ends to more correctly match the prototype.
the work box trucks are available from Ozark at times. i have models of this truck but have yet to find a material that i can print them in with out deflection.
