And now, for a bit of shameless name-dropping.
Back in 2021 at the V&T conference, I saw a new unbuilt kit of the V&T water car, in standard gauge F scale. Its detail parts were incredible. And I had to track down the source.
I eventually learned that the kit was developed by Don Niday (Iron Creek Shops; castings / production), Dave Frey (model maker and instructions-writer), and “our own” Al Pomeroy: designer, producer of casting masters, and model maker). I believe Bill Banta may have a hand in it, producing the wood parts.
I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with all these gentlemen either on the phone or face to face, and it’s really an honor to know some of the greatest modellers ever.
The team has produced two other V&T F scale (standard gauge) cars: the “ventilated” bax car 1005, and the locomotive transfer car. The box car is restored and lives at the NV State RR Museum (NSRM); the transfer car is being reconstructed.
Some of us have seen Al’s amazing models; and Dave sent me photos of the ones made by him. All of them are spectacular! OK, enough of me blabbing, here’s Dave’s photos.
[edit] Oops, I almost forgot the other names I wanted to drop
Wendell Huffman, former NSRM curator of history, is a super knowledgable gentleman. I serve with him on the V&TRRHS board, and we’ve had numerous historical exchanges. Mike Collins was a fantastic storehouse of V&T knowledge, and his drawings of V&T equipment are numerous and well-known, and have been vital to most V&T restoration effor4ts. Mike helped me with every V&T project I’ve worked on; and sadly, he passed away early last year. Both these gentlemen helped with these kit projects.
What an amazing all-star lineup for these efforts! They also did the mind-blowing Barnhart loader & cars.
