I have a car float at Williamsport on my layout. Right now its just a piece of marine ply with two sets of rails tacked to it, but I’m hoping to build out a real car float.
That said, the Detroit is a classic Great Lakes car ferry. Here’s a neat two track one, paddle wheel and all.
The Windsor and the St Clair are examples of larger, later model ones.
In this month’s GR, there’s an article about a guy building a ship - he uses it to store his rolling stock. It is HUGE.
And in the discussion about security on your layout, if you’re making carfloats out of rowboats like that guy in GR … well, you might need one of these to keep an eye on things:
