Large Scale Central

So What Gives?!!

Any body else have this happen? I was on the landing page. There was a photo I thought I would like to look at. I signed my ID and password, but did not click LOGIN (because, of course, then the photo would disappear). I clicked on the photo and got this: You do not have the permission to view this photo Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot!! If I cannot view the photo, WHAT IS IT DOING ON THE LANDING PAGE??!! Sometimes computer stuff is beyond annoying!

OK, rant over - your views, David Meashey

Dave - I think you need to be signed in to see any photos. I’ve always had a challenge posting a photo or photo attachment on any postings I place on this forum…it’s not very user friendly! So most of the time when I try to do so to help people see what I’m talking about, I get an error message and then just give up after 2 - 3 tries.

I share your rant and frustration!

Tom

I think it’s very user friendly, it’s just older than FB and that’s your rub.

I’m always signed in, so I can’t say I’ve ever been denied a pic.

To post any pictures on this site I have to revert back to using Internet Explorer every other site I visit I use Win Edge and it works just fine.

Old technology perhaps???

John,

I must respectfully disagree with the user friendly statement; I find it very user aggressive.

Having to load to “Freight Sheds” then copying a link to put in a post is just so yesterday that it is not funny.

In fact I do not post many pictures on here because of the round about way that has to be followed.

As in previous post I have found a workaround by taking a step back technological wise but still do not post pictures much.

Photos have always been a problem with this software package. Despite their “albums are integrated with the software” claim, this is just not true. Yes, you can have a photo album, but that same album is not integrated with the forums, and getting a direct URL for the picture is troublesome, at best.

In my search for new software, modern forum/messaging packages do not have any kind of integrated photo album. In all honesty, I find IMGUR the simplest site to use for photos. YMMV, of course.

Oh so true. I gave up long ago to post pics. Later RJD

Wow! After I upload, I use copy and paste to insert my pics. For me it’s Easy Peasy.

Chrome w/ Win 10

Wow! After I upload,

Yes, after you upload. And to get to the next photo you have to “back” up your browser to the file list and double-click the next picture. It is very cumbersome.

GScaleCentral in the UK manages to have photo galleries which are similar, but you can drag-and-drop an image to the image window in a post and it will sort it out for you. Very convenient.

I close the pic and select the next one to copy and paste. My finger doesn’t wear out…

For a free service with few advertisers left, I think it’s a good deal and one I can afford.

I’d hate for you guys to upset our benefactor and get the place shut down. It is a thankless job…

John;

I was not trying to insult anyone. It is more than a bit disconcerting to get a snippy message like I got for trying to open a photo seemingly offered for public viewing. I wanted an explanation, and Bob gave one. Finicky software. Lord knows good software is obscenely expensive. (Jessie James at least had the decency to carry a gun!) It is the reason why my email is on Outlook 2010 instead of the latest version. I have a satisfactory explanation, and remain grateful for this site.

Best, David Meashey

I use Firefox, I gave up on IE and Edge since they just don’t work with the products I use at work. Incidentally neither does Chrome. Since Firefox works for all that I do, its what I use for all that I do.

As for picture posting, yes, its cumbersome, but once I got the knack of it, its just routine. Maybe not the most efficient use of my time, but it does work once you have the logic worked out. Sometimes I find I have several browser windows open so I can switch between them to copy and past the needed URLs for what I am doing.

I do appreciate the time, effort, patience and investment Bob makes to keep this site working.

Dave I am glad you have your answer. I have things set so when I land on this site I am automatically logged in. So I haven’t seen the issue you had a question about.

As for using “outdated” software. I was using MS Office 2003 till just recently, because I had already paid for it, and it was working. The big winders tin update after the beginning of the year put and end to that. Oh well, I got my money’s worth out of MS office 2003.

I am very tech challenged, I use an old laptop and Windows I’m not sure what # it is. But with some reading and a program to size the pictures for best use of the freight she’d even I have figured out how to post pictures, and even some videos, but I am still figuring that part out. It is doable, just read the posts about how to do it, then once you get some practice it gets easier. BD has a great website, and I am sure if there was a free or cheap way to make pictures a simple one click addition he would do it , but unfortunately his last name isn’t Gates or Buffett.

Dave,

Had you been signed in to begin with before finding that photo you liked then signing in it probably would not have happened. It’s a “free site” which is supported by members and advertisements.

It’s a site that I personally appreciate and glad that the large scale RR modeling community still has it !

Rooster (I believe your real name is also Dave);

I do plan to add financial support once our own financial strain eases somewhat. Not a lot of discretionary income at present. Also, PayPal is no pal of mine, so it will most likely be a mailed check.
