So it begins, new Garden Railroad 2013

I wouldn’t look at Lowes or HD for plants, especially this time of year. Look online for nurseries that specialize in rock gardens in your area. That will get you started with plants that are adapted to thrive in your climate.

Here are two that I use in my area Pacific North West. You can contact them to get referrals for your area, I’m sure.

miniforest.com - miniature plants for garden railroads and bonsai enthusiasts

Miniforest is where I bought all my trees from on my last railway, I may just start putting a big list together over the fall and have them ship everything to me in the spring.
I have plenty of buildings I still need to get outside anyway before the end of this season, hopefully next weekend (3-day, labor day) the weather holds out and I can get a lot done then.

I had know idea we even needed or planned to do this, but, I was told it was needed and handed over the plant money to pay for it.

Funny how that works…

Before I knew what hit me I was handing over all my plant money, I am not even sure if I am allowed to use the new towels or if they are just for decoration!

You were wise to had over the plant money and YES the towels are for show only.

Get some more plant money. Its best to get your plants in the ground in the fall, so they have the winter to establish their roots. Spring might just be too late. Ask me how I know this… :frowning:

Here’s another good nursery that specializes in dwarf and miniatures. They ship all over the US. There’s a Garden Center near us that has a pretty good selection of their stuff. I’ve bought a lot of their stuff. You could probably find out from them if they have any customers in your area since they are strictly wholesale.

Its best to hit Lowes in the Spring. They are not good at restocking. Once they are out of one thing they replace it with something else. Most of my stuff came from Lowes, prices are so much cheaper. I like the nursery’s but you will go broke fast.

While I am putting out more buildings this weekend I get to play with the new toy!

Thanks Mark V, this will make the weekend all that more enjoyable!

Vincent :Don’t get me wrong…

Great job and glad you learned so much! Pics, video"s etc! But…

I think it’s time to close this and start new posts with idea’s and projects!

Sean

P.S go ahead and let it fly I’m a big boy and can handle it!

Well, I still want to update this topic as I add to the railroad.
I have to eventually get plants, but probably not until the spring of 2014.
And I still have buildings and what not that hopefully will get outside before the winter.
Just wish the weather was more cooperative this past weekend and I could have gotten a lot of stuff done!

Vincent I don’t want to be picky BUT you have it Garden …no plants???

I think this should of be in Track and Trestles.

Gee I feel like a real jerk!

New plants added you put in Gardens, Resent pics go in Model Photography

Why am a still going on???

Am I wrong?

I think I said to much. Sorry

Bob do we need another Forum Members Railways?

Vinny,

Don’t mind the guy above. I always look forward to your updates and have followed this thread from day one. Keep 'em coming.

Eh, it may be better suited for a different area, but who cares. I think most know its here and those of us who are following it come here to see what Little Vinny has in store for us today…

I had chosen to put this topic under Gardening because… well, it is called a Garden Railroad.
I didn’t want to post under my track section under the Track & Trestle section because in all honesty, I figured that would be where people would want to see far better track work then what I have to offer… Like hand laid track, and custom made trestle work… which I have none of.
My buildings are all old Pola type kits that I salvaged from my old railway… why would anyone want to see those being cleaned off and repainted in the Modeling section? Again, I can’t compete with some of the fantastic home made builds people put on there.
And well, all the pictures… Well I read the Photography section as being for expert type photo’s to discuss techniques and tips… again… I don’t have any techniques or tips. I own a simple point and shoot camera that I can just about figure out how to get connected to my computer and down/up load pictures.
I am not a professional by any means, I am just someone who enjoys collecting and playing with G-scale trains.
I thought it would be best keeping everything under one topic, out of the way, in a forum section that really doesn’t see much use, and be able to just post all aspects of me getting to completion of my Garden Railroad… which I promise… will someday have plants!

Vincent, don’t worry about it. There is always someone who is upset because a certain topic is not posted where he thinks it should be.

Boy do I feel like a tool!!
