Large Scale Central

So it begins, new Garden Railroad 2013

Looks good Vince!

Wish I had installed Central Air when we had the money. We have a few window AC units. The bedroom gets nice and cool at night but the one I have in the living room is way under-powered. Its cranking full blast right behind me ad I’m still sweating.

They say it will break tomorrow. Maybe I can run some trains.

Layout is starting to come alive. Structures make a difference.

Jon no central air here. Not sure if its worth it since days like this are uncommon. We use window units. They seem to work well. With solar we don’t worry about electric bill.

Vinny, That looks super. Weather hear in ct. starting to change a little. looking for severe storms about 3 this afternoon. Regards,Ron

Thanks everyone, looking forward to getting some plants on the layout in the fall…hopefully I will have all my buildings that I have in place by then!

I am hoping those thunder storms don’t fizzle out by the time they hit my area, so need some relief from the heat and humidity!..and, I want to run some trains!!!

Took a trip over to Tractor Supply and found these!

They had a bunch of them, should be able to get the barn outside now and I will have some wild life to hide in the trees when they arrive!

Finally, we had a nice day to do some track maintenance and run some trains!
Temps were in the mid 80’s today and not as humid as the past few weeks were, so we filled in some little dips with some crushed blue stone and then we re-leveled the entire track and put down some more stone dust. We had figured the track was going to settle some, and it did. Not to bad overall and really didn’t take us too long to get the rails up and running.

A few pics from todays run!

Yes, most of the day was spent running my new AML USRA 0-6-0

Short video of todays run, had the USAT Docksider working the reversing track and had the AML 0-6-0 running the passenger line.

I didn’t get to do much with the railway over the weekend as I spent it all working to pay off my train addiction, but we had enough time after dinner tonight to get the barn in place.
Lighting was a bit tricky with the sun setting, but I played with the pictures a little with the editing software to get them useable!

That’s it for now, probably wont get much done with it this week as we are getting ready for our vacation to Ft. Meyers Florida on Saturday. Then when we get back it will be time to start figuring out what we will be planting for the fall!

We don’t have air conditioning as it contributes big time to global warming. How to stay cool without air conditioning, even in a heat wave:
To stay cool at night: 1. Get naked. 2. Lie on the bed sheets. 3. Frtom a plant mister spray a mist upwards to fall gently all over yourself. 4. any slight crossdraft will have a dramatic cooling effect. 5. If you have a ceiling fan above the bed, even better. 6. It works like coming out into the air after a swim in the lake.
To remain comfortable in daytime: Plant deciduous trees along the south side of your property to shade the house. Avoid work. Tell your boss you’re sick. Sit in the shade with a mint julep, ice tea, or your favorite adult beverage. Spend more time in your basement.
To keep a cool house: Keep all the windows and south side shades shut until after dark. If it cools at night, invite that air in, now you know how to preserve it over the next day. Be sure you have ventilation in your attic. You don’t need mechanical assistance, just adequate well-placed vents up there.
To have a cool car: Modern car designers, regrettably, have come to rely on in-car air conditioners and have forgotten the science of ventilation. The no-draft window, it seems, is a thing of the past, as is plain common sense. Outside air coming in the front needs a hole at the back of the car so it can push out the hot air. D’oh…! Some cars don’t even have windows that open back there! To fix this, buy a sporty little convertible. Or get a .45 gun and shoot a few holes into the back of your vehicle, and into one of those designers.

OK John, you just cost me my lunch!!! The thought of “YOU” getting “NAKED” laying on top of your sheets just brought my lunch back up!!!

Stop!!! I don’t need anymore word pictures. LOL

Okay I lied, didn’t think I would get another building outside before we left but with a slightly extended lunch break today I cleaned up my old Carlise freight depot.
I also found use for some of my new figures and accessories I found!
The Coca Cola truck I have had for years, looks perfect next to the depot.

So this will probably be it until after vacation…unless I take a long lunch break again tomorrow!

Put some astro turf out there to much brown!

I know I know  We will be doing some planting in September. I am hopeful we can get some ground cover plants, moss and a few miniature trees to get started.

Looking good Vinny!

Just got back from a weeks vacation down in Ft. Myers Florida!
Good news is that the railroad remained in tack, no buildings were over turned, no track destroyed (we had some strong storms here while we were away)
The bad news…I have a LOT of weeding to do tomorrow when I get up!

Going to start shopping for plants hopefully tonight, was looking on line and the Lowe’s right down the street from my house is showing good stock on the ground cover plants we have been looking at.

So possibly sometime soon there may be some green on my railway…besides weeds!

Well, Penny & I started out the day with good intentions on picking up some ground cover plants and doing some planting… Epic fail.
The two Lowes that are close to me that were showing on-line that they had plenty of what we were looking for had nothing. We even took a ride up to a nursery that usually has everything and they had very little.
So I didn’t want to compromise and buy plants that I didn’t really want and then hate them, so the decision was made to wait until next spring.
But some how in a rather surprising turn of events we ended up re-doing our bathroom! New shower curtains, towels, floor mats, tooth brush holder, soap dispenser, the list is endless!
I had know idea we even needed or planned to do this, but, I was told it was needed and handed over the plant money to pay for it.

Funny how that works…

I wouldn’t look at Lowes or HD for plants, especially this time of year. Look online for nurseries that specialize in rock gardens in your area. That will get you started with plants that are adapted to thrive in your climate.

Here are two that I use in my area Pacific North West. You can contact them to get referrals for your area, I’m sure.
