Snowplow build

For over a year I have been thinking about building a snow plow but I was not sure what I wanted. I had bought an Aristo snowplow last year to hold me over. I was never happy with it (never really fit my RR) After looking through some GR magazines I came across a really cool looking plow build (feb 2009) Rio Grande Southern plow. Who says GR is not worth it  Once I found what I wanted it was time to start building it or at least build it with some backwoods modifications. Kittatinny style. I started by making the aristo plow flat car shorter and then reattaching the wheels. I then cut away parts of the plow (Eventually I will add wood ect… for supports and to attache to the main body) I then started to build the skeleton of the plow car.

My next step is to add wood siding and make the windows and doors. Then attach the plow and put a roof on it.

Looks good!

Looking good so far. Don’t forget to fill it with something heavy before you close it in

Any snow plow is a good plow. Can’t wait for more photos.

Good choice of plow…but then I’m prejudiced…

Yea, you'll need to add some weight to it, the RGS plow was always derailing.

I see mom got her garage back…

There is just something about snowplows that strike a pleasing chord. I have a aristo plow setup that I use on the first run of the day to clear sticks and leaves from the track. It works good but is not very attractive. Mine was bright red so I dulled it down with some rusty red paint and it is more aggreable now. I really like the style of plow you are building and you have a good start there, do keep us posted on your progress.

“I have a aristo plow setup that I use on the first run of the day to clear sticks and leaves from the track.” Todd; It’s not a plow, but I kitbashed this vehicle to sweep twigs and leaves off the track about twenty years ago. It also has a Baumann buffing wheel type track cleaner in the center of the gondola section. I used a dpdt switch to make the buffing wheels rotate opposite the direction of travel.

Have fun, David Meashey

I got more done today . I put the siding up and started working on the windows and roof. Im making the roof so I can take it off and get at the batteries that I plan on using for the front light. The roof has to be painted or use a rusted metal roof like on my climax and then add some roof walks to the top. Then I will start working on the plow and attaching it.

Great looking build going on there Shawn.

Not gonna say it!
Hey BTW where is my favorite plow these days?
Nice work!

Your plow build is coming along Shawn. I like the boarded up window. I recently built a tool shack for an odometer car and when I was snapping plexi for the windows a corner broke off one so instead of cutting another I used it. Even 1;20 scale tall kids throw rocks.

Dave Meashy that is the first train I have ever seen that sports a moustache!!! Actually that is a good idea.
Todd

Cool plow, Shawn! BTW, I see your layout is going to be featured in the April issue of GR – congrats! I’m looking forward to it.

Is it done yet???

It better be soon. The delayed winter weather will be arriving soon :open_mouth:

Got some more done to the plow. The plow is hooked up, roof painted, walkway put in on the roof and windows framed. Next step is off to the paint shot, details added, weathered and then detail the inside. Oh and hook up the light up front.

The guys needed a way to rais the plow if it is too low and also secure the plow so it does not move up or down. Patent pending.

Womens Work!

The only detail you need inside, Shawn, is rocks! (Or lead).

Shows great imagination Shawn, using that blade, then making the rest.

Are those screws on the side to scale?
