Prototype ffor everything!!
Cool! It makes sense too – fill the tank with water to provide the necessary weight.
Uh, Ray, remember, water expands when it freezes. Might give a whole new meaning to “Pop rivet”.
YES! I know steamers operated in subzero weather - and it takes half of forever for that much water to freeze solid; just had to say that.
If I were running the thing, I’d go with fuel oil or sand for ballast.
AND Undecorated Vandy tenders are on “super blowout” sale at Trainworld right now! Just sayin!
Chas
Ok I’ve got an Aristo replacement Plow blade I got years ago from Lantz’s I believe stashed away someplace and when I got home last ngiht at midnight from the hospital in Buffalo (mom had surgery) I saw a box from Trainworld. Now to find the time to work on this?
Chas
Could be a tank car, as well.
Just fill it with sand or slurry for weight.
Well in between moments yesterday I opened up the package from TW. found that the weights inside one of the two are “loose” inside the tender. I didn’t even take it out of the plastic bag though. Enought o amke sure that the details on the outside were somewhat intact. Now to get into the shop and find the workbench and that Plow piece. It will likely get filled with “something”, sand or more metal weights.
Chas
How wide is the Aristocraft Vanderbilt tender?
Apparently they aren’t on blowout any longer… nuts!
I obviously have not gotten to this bash at all. Jason did you call TW? It can’t hurt to ask them.
Chas
Anybody notice the rear truck? A friction bearing truck converted to roller bearings! Pretty interesting prototype.
Thanks, Robert
As I reported elsewhere, I’ve escaped and done some spring cleaning in the workshop. Started to get the worst of the clutter taken care of on Monday night. Last night I took my mother back down to her room and glanced in the workshop on my way back upstairs and noticed the Aristo Plow blade sitting on a shelf that had been buried. I cannot reach it yet but I can see it! So basically I’ve got the two large pieces of this puzzle located now. Still need to find the workbench though.
Chas
Ok, I got one of the vandy tenders out of it’s shipping carton and found the Aristo replacement plow blade I bought years ago at Wholesale trains (Lantz’s in Horseheads, NY) I was not happy with my initial “fitting” of the plow blade to the tender. While the blade on the gondola looks huge, against the Vandy tender it is not quite so big. I’ve not given up on this project BUT wanted some more information so I went googling. I found this webpage online with links to shots of various UP Vanderbuilt tenders converted to snowplows. UP 900001 to 900022 are all converted Vandy’s.

I like #900005 – it’s kind of stubby, has lots of funky details, and even has a little cab:
Ray those caught my eye too! I think given the variety of Vandy plows I can mix and match some details and be close. Sadly this seems to be a roadname specific practice? Most Northeastern Railroads used the Russel style plows. Gonna have to come up with a good justification for one on my Northeastern fictional(ish) road.

Actually Geoff, The Shawmutt ran thru here with mostly Vanderbilt tenders. Since I hope to model some of the Shawmutt locomotives at some point that’s a plausible story in itself.
Chas
I’m glade it will work out.
