Smoke Animation with an E-Cigarette's Vaporizer

Good day, all - I have wanted to explore using the smoke generated by an E-Cigarette for some time and have finally finished that experiment and have posted the results on my web page:

http://trainelectronics.com/Animation_Smoke/

and on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgyHecCF0QA

The method of generating smoke that I describe is easy and inexpensive to implement. While it may not be appropriate for installation inside of a locomotive (It could be done but such things already exist!) it is ideal for smoke coming from a factory, burning house, car crash, etc.

We used it at a train show last weekend and it was very well received!

Have a look and let me know what you think

E-cigarettes create a vapor[19][23] of flavors, glycerol and propylene glycol.[24] Its composition varies across and within manufacturers.[23] The vapor can contain toxins and traces of heavy metals at levels permissible in inhalation medicines,[24] and some potentially harmful chemicals not found in tobacco smoke at concentrations permissible by workplace safety standards.[25] However, chemical concentrations may exceed the stricter public safety limits.[19] High aldehyde levels, which have been generated in laboratory settings by overheating e-liquid, cause a strong bitter taste.

I think it’s pretty cool, perhaps there is a blend for these that would max out smoke but keep environmental issues low?

I commented in another thread about using the E cigarettes for generating model smoke. I see those folks downtown with a huge vapor cloud around them, and wish my steam locomotives could generate such a cloud.

That thread, and this thread, are eliciting some negative comments.

Dave’s smoke stack put out some impressive clouds. If the fan had mixed the smoke and air in the stack a bit better, it would have been almost perfect for representing a smokestack. The fluid that Dave was using was not particularly offensive to me, but that’s just me. But I can see where one would not want to use this set up for too long in an enclosed space.

This thread contains chemicals that are known to cause cancer in the state of California.

Anything that puts CRAP into the air we breath, when it is not needed, is just plain STUPID…just like pouring poison into our drinking water…WE NEED AS CLEAN AIR AS POSSIBLE TO LIVE A HEALTHY LIFE…

OTHERS MAY DISAGREE …that is their business…to each their own…

Get off your high horse Fred. When you get rid of the garden tractor you ride around in all day or start walking to the airport instead of driving a car to pick up your cousin, maybe you’re argument will be credible.

And did I mention that you support a group that runs coal burning, smoke belching steam machinery just for the fun of it?

Let’s calm down here.

Gee, sure went crazy!

Thanks David

did i miss it but what did you use as a on off timer?

thanks

Richard - I used a small digital timer like this one:

I set it for 30 seconds on and about 2 minutes off. I also added a switch that allowed you to activate it even if it was in the down time mode.

I just added a 2nd video on YouTube that shows details on how the smokestack was set up on my module along with some video clips from a recent train show where it was displayed.

It also shows an interesting discovery that can be used to improve the smoke flow from a chimney.

Ah ha! You fixed it. Nice work Dave.

David - I am glad I got it resolved, too - I knew that it was bothering you!
