Slugs for the garden

Like building a Sharknose, rebuilding the layout, drawing a plugdoor high cube boxcar to build, and numerous other projects, I started building a slug unit out of some parts I’ve accumulated. Keith

Keith,
You need to resize the picture. I like big pictures, but that one’s HUGE
Ralph

If you really wanna see huge slugss you should come see my hosta garden, lol

Keith are you working on the Shark model from the UK or scratchbuilt?

Much better
Ralph

Shark nose from the UK.

Cleaned up the body, got most of the running chassis worked on, planning a few additions and modifications following a PRR prototype (less the trainphone antennas). Will end up painting it with our club’s roadname.

Keith

Resized. Sorry, downloaded that one straight from my 16megapixel camera.

Well, we do run LARGE scale trains, and besides, those that say that size dosen’t matter, obviously do not have big ones.

Here is a picture of the prototype:

These were rebuilds by Norfolk Southern (and some earlier RRs?) using old GP-9 and GP18s. They had their prime movers and generators removed and get power for their traction motors from a “mother unit”. Usually a specially converted GP40-2. They add low speed traction and were used mostly for switching, hump duty, and low speed drag freights. I’m basing mine loosely on the NS prototype, as mine will carry our Delaware and Lake Shore paint scheme. Keith

And I thought this was about the other kind of slugs, interesting prototype

Interesting concept.
I recall that BC Rail used some old RS3’s for slugs. Cut the cabs off, sectioned the carbody down and filled it with concrete for weight.

NEAT! I have never seen a “large scale” version done before. Very unique!

The interesting part of these, being classed as RP-E4D, is that they are equipped with dynamic brakes, hence the fan.

The latest road slugs being built by the Juniata Shops are real locomotives in that they are equipped with standard cabs and all the appurtenances there-of. The 600 & 700 series engines are so built: http://www.nslocos.com/nsroadslug.html

There are some seriously interesting units on the nslocos.com site.

Got some painting done on the cowling, still waiting on parts for the frame.

Will have to do some scratchbuilding of the airtanks and equipment under the frame as well as all the m/u connections between the mother unit and slug.

Any have any experience making brake lines and such out of rubber tubing? I thought there was an article in GR a few years back, but I have not had any luck finding it yet. Thanks, Keith

Very nice work, that paintwork is looking neat too.

Alec

Bruce, I think that is your queue.

…:)…
Nice use of the USA 7/9 fan unit…nice build so far looks great!
…check out my Amtrash builds…I use black (18 gauge I think) automotive wire for cabling(Napa) …as for the tubing Bruce did a great article on glad hands with magnets (here on LSC and in GR)

Ya, something about teh rubber tubing used in a specific type of medical process if I recall correctly.

Got some more work done now that various parts have come in. Borrowed trucks off of one of my GP 7/9s Bashed together 2 sets of long handrails Added bashed airtank, brake controls & piping, and radio control devices where fuel tank used to be Scratch built the antenna platform on top (yellow strobes will eventually work) Painted frame Still have more details to add, already have some of the m/u cables and connecting hoses built. I am using magnets to make them easy to uncouple. Still have work to do on the electronics and details to the Gp38-2 and the Gp40s that it will mate to

I might be installing one of the new QSI decoders for controlling the various lights. Was thinking of turning the sound of the prime mover/generator all the way down, but using the sound of the blower fans to simulate the traction motor sounds. Keith

Keith, nice piece of workmanship…

You’ve done an excellent job modeling the prototype.
The prototype sure is one odd looking piece of machinery
But it is more interesting than many of the other slugs
