Running with sound off, I was getting this low rattle.
Drove me nutz.
Wouldn’t you know it was on the other side of the loco, the bench is 52" tall, and the cylinders won’t fit through the uprights of my turntable.
Unplugged it lifted it off, re-set it on the tracks…and it’s the cylinder area on left side.
Disconnected the main and eccentric, worked them by hand, and it’s in the valve gear.
It’s the actual GUIDE housing just behind the valve body.
Now, I’ve lubed it, so let’s find out why.
Okay, there is a guide cross-pin the rides in slots in the housing, just above the crosshead guides.
Oil is virtually impossible to get into the slot on the OUTside.
Go, grabbed my “speed secret”, GunSlick Graphite (anhydrous paste), put some on the tip of an Xacto, worked it into both slots on that side, and for good measure did the right side, back on the track, dead quiet.
You might want to watch that spot.
