Slater's Plastikard gearboxes

I’ve had a bucket list project for a long time of making my own locomotive trucks, with nose-hung traction motors. Recently, I have been looking at Slater’s Plastikard gearboxes: specifically, model AGB17.

In exchanging emails with him, I found that he uses 3/16" axles. Is this a British standard? Because all the US made wheels I have use a 5.5mm axle.

I’m trying to figure out of there’s a viable way to modify it to use the bigger axle. Does anyone on here have experience doing such a thing?
