Size of Bachman's 2010 2-6-0 Mogul?

I saw a picture of the 2010 Bachmann mogul. I’m interested if it is not a midget version of a mogul that I “think” was the previous model. I remember it being very small – enough it would look disproportionate even compared to a Bachmann or LGB caboose.

It looked good in the on-line brochure brought on screen from a reader’s Bachmann posting.

Anyone know the actual dimensions? Are they close to the LGB mogul?
Thanks,
Wendell

That’s the industrial mogul on the bottom. All three locomotive images are sized proportionally to one another. It’s tiny. Really tiny. Later, K

It is a re-issue of the Industrial/Mining Mogul… aka ‘Indy’. Yes, it is the smaller one that they re-used the Hawaii #5 2-4-2 molds on. I’d say it’s about 2/3 to 3/4 the size of the LGB mogul… definitely not nearly as ‘brawny’… But if you remember how small the Hawaii #5 really is, it DOES look prototypical… Otherwise, after a cab swap, it looks pretty good with 4 wheel LGB Toytrain stuff, those odd short Bachmann cars, or even Kalamazoo coaches. I just hope they added weight.

Hi Mik:

Can you post more of your Indy prototype photos ?

Thank you
Norman

Hi again Mik:

I guess you swapped in a Delton/Aristo C-16 cab?
It is only the cab that really bothers me on the Indy.
If I bought one, I was thinking of swapping in a C-16 cab, installing HLW wood burner headlamp and a HLW wood burner cowcatcher.
Then the engine would look ok.
Again, it is the Indy cab with the uneven side cab windows that bothers me.

Norman

Norman,

Until Mik comes back, you may want to check my thread in the rolling stock forum … there are some photos that might help you that I’ve linked to.

Matthew (OV)

Norman, I think this is as close as you are going to find for an actual ‘prototype’… What B’mann produced was a ‘catalog’ engine - meaning somebody COULD have ordered one that way, but perhaps never did.

As for the Hawaii #5, Jon Radder posted some here http://www.largescalecentral.com/LSCForums/viewtopic.php?id=13344 Yes, I used the c-16 cab… I thought I was buying two… I got 12, so I sold a bunch of other people cabs, too. I think I might even have a couple left. Banta makes a really, really nice laser cut wood cab kit for it too.

Yes the Indy is small, which is good news for guys like me who were getting sick and tired of the ever growing proportions of each new LS item being offered, Better even for me is the Lyn will be reissued. I liked my Indy, its very reliable, just needed a tad more lead shot added to the air tanks. Banta Modelwork issued a 1/20 recabbing kit which made the dinky look muck bigger. I have to think about picking up another as I already have a still sizable roster for my tiny layout. I will much more likely pick up a Lyn.

The Indy would be a great start for a 0-6-0T switcher, maybe even for the RGS #3 Masterclass we once talked about.

Kevin and all:
Kevin’s comparison photos were helpful. While good looking, it is SMALL!
Mic’s larger cab helps. I’ve two of the LGB moguls- the Bachmann looks better, yet I’ll pass on the size.
Thanks,
Wendell

You can also buy a Banta Model works cab for it. They are like $40 all wood and look really good. Mine is about 1/2 done and is really easy to put together. it also comes with sides for the coal bunker on the tender and wooden overlays for the walkways on the loco.

After seeing the photo of that Maui loco, I really want to get an Indy! I love small locos, and I’m not modeling in 1:20 so I don’t need an oversized cab.

Terry:

Do you know if the Banta cab will fit on the original B’mann 2-4-2 + tender locomotive?

Any possibility you could provide the vertical dimension of the cab (from the top of the footplate to the inside (center) of the roof?

I want to convert mine to represent a small construction locomotive. The 2-4-2 wheel arrangement and small size make it a perfect candidate for back & forth operation as would be required in construction or mining operations.

The factory cab roof is somewhat too low to be a nominal 1:20 locomotive, but a new, taller cab and perhaps some work on the tender could make it plausible.

Thanks & Happy RRing,

Jerry

Jerry, since they used the same molds, I would assume it would be a perfect fit. But check with Banta before you buy.

The Bantaworks cab should fit both the Indy and the Columbia (the 2-4-2)
