Six days in the mountains

Good weather, lots of trains etc. etc.

Day One, Part One with more to come. As mentioned: it’s nice to have a life!

More from Day One

My buddy was raving about the light on the Intermodal leaving Blue River - he filmed the sunny side.

He hasn’t seen the shadow and light show yet that played on my side. Along with the sonic effect from the “interrupted” crossing bell.

Here all of Day Two

You’ve probably heard enough about my legendary “dumb luck”, suffice to say it was another of those days.

BTW Day Three was a “give it a rest” day; between Jasper and Lake Louise nothing but grandiose scenery i.e. no trains.

:stuck_out_tongue:

More train stuff to follow a little later.

Video 2 day one over the bridge I counted 146 cars on that long train. I hope you have a light camera or a tripod or I bet your arm must have been getting tired filming all that train. Pretty cool the variety of cars on that one.

Have to check out the others later on.

Thanks for posting these Hans

Thanks Todd!

Yes, I have a light camera - Panasonic TM-90. I also have a relatively light , though old, Manfrotto tripod which sometimes gets used as a walking stick on steep slopes. The new, light weight cams are tricky to hold steady for any length of time. Something that apparently escapes “a few” people who upload to YouTube.

While we were in Calgary I bought a Panasonic V-720 which does surround sound, WiFi, streaming and can be controlled from a tablet/phone. That will be the cat’s meow to do simultaneous shooting with the two cams. There have been many occasions when I thought “man that would be the ticket” as the train rolled by.

I expect that I won’t need to do colour corrections, either.

Now I just need to upgrade to Power Director 12, which does synchro editing with up to 4 cams.

The vid I did on the Kettle Valley railroad was hit and miss - or remember where we were at given times - since the files from the Sony cam had no real time reference points.

Day four was the trip to Calgary to do some shopping and sight seeing. On the return trip to Canmore I took the scenic route on Hwy 1a which follows the Bow River and a good portion of the railway line.

Two shorty trains were heading for Exshaw AB

[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/76069118[/vimeo]

Not to the same location, the light units were to switch the cement plant and the train with the dump cars was to drop them at the next loading point a bit farther West.

[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/76381589[/vimeo]

The two units had to make room for what was coming from the plant first and then they headed up the ramp.

Next up was a westbound Mixed Manifest. First shot at Exshaw, AB. Right beside a dinky little creek that brought immense masses of stone down the mountain, Couldn’t tell if they had to clear the stuff and then reposition the bridge.

The second shot at Gap Lake right on the edge of the Rockies.

Sunny days, clear skies and the Canadian Rockies; hard to beat!

Next day, after a super breakfast, it was off going West. First stop at Morant’s Curve, that is other than shooting stills of the mountains, the river etc. etc. at different stops.

[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/81343475[/vimeo]

Everyone and his brother has Morant’s Curve on the bucket list. No problem as long as they make less noise than the trains.

Nice and quiet in the winter, especially when it’s clear and really cold.

Next was Wapta Lake. When the weather is as beautiful as it was that day it could almost make one cry.

A slightly different story in the winter, with snow a-flying and wind a-blowing. When even my camcorders wear hats until the trains show up.

OK it’s Friday (Dec13th); 5G of space. Here is that very long grain empties on the 2.2% grade up Big Hill just East of Field BC.

Just for kicks we had to go and have a look from the official viewing point of the upper spiral tunnel.

1.2km, as the crow flies, to the tracks way up on the mountain.

Is this Tehatchepi North?

Sort of, but with scenery.

I’m almost done editing that Six Days trip, however … uploads to VIMEO have to wait until Friday when another 5G of space comes my way. Meanwhile I upload them on YT in WMV format, since a few of my buddies mentioned the their provider has a problem displaying Vimeo.

Since YT finally added the “Section” feature, it is now easier to head straight to the different content sorted into applicable sections.
