Simpson Carter Bros. 28 ft Flat Car Kit

I received as a Christmas present, a kit of the 1:24 scale 28 ft Carter Bros. Flat Car, mfg by Simpson, ca. 1989. It is complete, with unopened plastic bags and all directions.

Has anyone put this together? Any hints?

What glue should be used to resist the occasional rain storm. It would not be stored outside, but you never know.

Any help will be appreciated.

Steve,
If it’s wood, I use Tightbond III,
but like everything else, everyone has their own favorites.

I like Titebond II for these type of projects. Its a bit thinner than III and easier to work with for smaller pieces.

OK. I’ve read the destructions through several times, and I can’t get beyond the first step. It says, “Form your needlebeams.” What the h*ll is a needlebeam. Sounds like something you’d find on StarTrek.

Then, step 2 is, “Prepare your body bolsters…” Again, WTFO? Sounds like Milady’s corset.

What are these things and where do they go?

Perhaps you can esplain “endsill” while you’re at it!

Russ Simpson was kinda sparse on his destructions, wasn’t he?

Awww…
Just build it to look like a flatcar…

I’m pretty sure a needle beam is the same as a queen post - the part that holds the truss rods in place.

Bolster are the part that the trucks are attached to.

Not sure on the end sill but it might be the metal ends of the flat car deck.

Needbeams are the parts that run across the car that the queen posts are attached to, end sill is the end beam of the car ( the framing timbers on rolling stock are called sills). Body bolsters also run across the frame, and yes they hold the trucks on.

Thanks, Bart. Now I can get on with it!

I’m just an encyclopedia of useless knowledge…

This site has several diagrams and nomenclature for a variety of rolling stock:
