Large Scale Central

Simplified 'Hanrahan' Reefer

Based on cigar cars from LGB. 500mm in length. Length was based on being able to use the cutoff end sections to build a Rio Grande ‘40-footer’ reefer, based on another cigar car. Unfortunately, this car requires using both underframe sections to enable a full length chassis. While shown with archbar trucks, I will modify the end sills to enable Bachmann passenger trucks to be fitted, to run as an express reefer with a passenger consist.

Dont repaint it Tim, just touch up the paint, it looks great that way!

Pretty neat!

Further to above, I have utilised the end sections removed from the cars above to make the Rio Grande 40-footer reefer. I think that the car looks very long, but scales out at 40 feet in length. Trussrods still to fit, although full length underframe already installed.

I like them but I doubt they’re R1 compatible anymore.

Ready for service. Hanrahan reefer is in my railroad ‘corporate’ roadname.

They look great. I really like that green and black scheme.

Tim, both cars look beautiful…

If I was to contemplate another long reefer, then I have learned something from this project, when dealing with LGB. Do not intermix model numbers. Being a little impatient, rather than get another 4074 series reefer out of storage, I used a 4072 series reefer that was at hand. I believed the only difference between the models was the 4074 series was a retooled 4072 series, that omitted the cast/moulded brakeshaft on the 4072 and provided a clean end wall, with provision of a brass brakeshaft. However, unknown to me until I had cut the reefer to size, was that the 4072 series car is minutely narrower (around 0.5-0.75 mm) than the 4074 series car. This left the telltale join at either end of the finished customised car. Next time I will stick to only 4074 series cars for bashing.

It certiainly was a fun bash, with no dramas (other than the final painting), as on this car I bonded the roof to the body for strength, so the roof/endwalls needed to be masked off to enable spraying the body colour. Always a little drama when removing the masking after a successful respray.
