Large Scale Central

Silver Spring Station

My station for my main town of Silver Spring is prototypically based on the Rockford and Interurban combination depot in Winnebago Illinois -

The body is pink insulation board construction. Most of it is 3/4 inch except the ends which are 2 inches thick for strength -

The foam was cut on the table saw and glued together with Titebond II. Window and door openings were cut out with an exacto knife. The removed sections were used to reinforce the door and windows. Window openings were cut out with my Tippi hot wire cutter. The windows and doors are Precision Products and brick veneer is Plastruct. The veneers were glued with Loctite PowerGrab.

The sub roof is hardibacker board with aluminum panels I ran over a jig and and shaped with a Sharpie cap. The aluminum was give to me by Yogi Wallace at last year’s ECLSTS. The corbels were cut and shaped in cedar. The base is hardibacker topped with cedar boards.

My station just picked up second place at this year’s ECLSTS model contest. My boxcab picked up first in the very competitive kitbashed self propelled contest. My 7/8’s rail truck also received second place in the scratchbuilt self propelled category.

I had a lot of fun at this year’s ECLSTS and got to meet just about everyone (except missing Bob and Bruce). I had fun giving out buttons I had made up for the club and friends. They became a highly sought after item (well, maybe not).

I was wondering who made that station. Nice work Brian.

What do you use to cut the Hardibacker? I just bought a sheet to try out and it looks like some kind of cement.

Wow! Congratulations! Those were nice models - and to get ribbons in three categories is one heck of an achievement.

I recognized the boxcab and the rail truck but had not seen the station before. Very nice…

I don’t know how we missed you!

Thanks guys.

Ken,

If it doesn’t have to be a perfect straight line cut, I use a diamond blade on my angle grinder.
For straight cuts I used a carbide tipped hand cutter (about $6 in the tile aisle of the home box store) and a flat steel bar straight edge. It takes many passes to get all the way through. I flip it over when I get about half way through.

Bruce,

I was keeping an eye out for you on Saturday but I asked Jack if he had seen you and said you were there Friday. Finishing touches were put on the station Wednesday night before heading out Thursday morning but I was happy with the results! I loved the story about the car swap.
I hope you’ll be able to make it to and ops session or two once it gets warmer out.

-Brian

Brian, I’ll make an ops session! Heck, I might even rejoin.

Brian,

Congratulations on your wins. That’s about as close to a grand slam as I’ve seen in awhile.

Very nice looking depot. I’d like to see a better photo of your other two winning entries as well.

That’s a nice looking station! Congrats on your contest wins!

Recently I tried using Hardibacker for making bases under my turnouts, but after the fourth one I gave it up. It was just too hard to cut with the few tools I have, especially on curves.

Now I’m using some 1/4" thick scrap plastic that I got cheap from the local plastics dealer.

There’s a special blade for Hardiboard, and they go in a circular saw. Use a painters mask, or something, the dust is nasty.

Neato! Thanks for the photos. I’m especially in love with that rail truck.

Brian,

I have my ECLSTS 2008 button and am very proud of it.

You only missed Bruce and Bob because you didn’t hang in the alcove enough. We even had Bruce’s new EBT hopper sitting on the Timesaver for a while. All switching came to a stop because every one felt that hopper was too expensive to be slammed around.

Ric was that you at the timesaver??? Thanks for letting my son try out his new trolley on your timesaver!!

If he looked like the guy in the white had with the beard…that was Ric…

Twas us and your welcome. Been in the same place the last 6 years. Best spot in the hall. Heads on the right, snack bar on the left, unload and load the van out the alcove doors.

The bigger guy with his back to us in the pic was the guy that ran the trolley for us

That would be Andy Clarke
