Silhouette Cameo

I have ordered one, should be here by Friday, hope it’s everything the reviews cracked it up to be… I know Bob has one as well, and I know a few people are interested in what it can do, so I’m thinking that it needs a thread all to itself.

this is the unit from their website -

Only problem i see with it would be keeping my wife and son away from it as it can do some pretty impressive things. Looking forward to the Print and Cut feature. Basically it will print off on a regular printer the design, then you place it in the cutter and it will then cut the pattern…

We’ll see how that goes this weekend

Bob feel free to chime in and let us know what your doing with yours…

Mark,

If they do scrap booking and school projects it will get the use it deserves.

It will just be a matter of buying more consumables.

I’ve had one for over a year, and have fun with it! Software works very well, and you can get lots of supplies for it on eBay at a pretty good price. You can not only print letters, but you can also get stencil material and paint your lettering on, if you prefer. Have fun with it!

Can one of you guys tell me the smallest vinyl letters this will cut?

I’m interested in making vinyl lettering for a few rail cars.

Bill

Just got the package from Fedex, looks good, have to go get some vinyl and start testing what this thing can do

I have a Roland Stika SV8 .
Seems to do the same job but it appears to be dearer than the one shown above.

It can ALSO use the very thin plastic with backing that aeromodellers cover their 'planes with (when cut to max width)…

I found that setting the height of the cutting blade the hardest…you really have to get bang on just to cut the vinyl and not any of the vinyl backing.

There’s no answer to that , Ross .

I’ve done some 3/8 letters using the default settings on vinyl. I tried some 1/8 but they didn’t come out well. I Want to try slower speed for them

Bob , we have had 1/8" letters made , but I have no idea which machine our friendly local printer uses .

The letters have to be handled with fine tweezers when siting them , and we have found that it is not wise to varnish over them , which one may be tempted to do because they look tiny and vulnerable .

The whole side being lettered however takes (gentle)polish well , and we have had no letters falling off with this treatment .

Mike

Guys,

what file formats can be imported? (DXF?) or do you have to work with the machines internal programs?

AL P.

Al,

check this

I forgot to mention about the Roland STIKA machine. It came with a COPPER coated A4 sheet of vinyl which can have a printed circuit cut out. It can then be mounted on a board or card and have components soldered to it…I have not yet been tempted to try it out.

Funny thing about this printer is - I am going to 3d print the pen holder that will fit into this to make it into a plotter as well as a vinyl cutter, the pen adapter is like $10 from Silhouette + shipping, i can print them for pennies

Plotter sounds good, what’s the max length of continuous feed?

witout checking, i’m thinking 10’

So they took the design for a plotter and turned it into a cutter, and you are turning it back into a plotter. Ah, ok.

gonna have to figure out how to hook it up to a dremel tool and use it as a cnc - JUST KIDDING

edit

A traditional plotter can’t print something and then cut out the same pattern, this can

Mark I know a plotter doesn’t cut. But isn’t it a plotter redesigned to cut.

Actually, if you could make a mount for the end of the flex shaft of a Dremel, then you could turn it into a cnc…or better yet, if you could get a cheap laser and mount that to it, then you would have a cnc laser cutting machine and could make your own wood kits. So you could print out a locomotive kit on the 3D printer, cut out lettering for the locomotive and cars on this machine, then cut out wood parts for the cars, supplemented with plastic detail parts from the 3D printer, and you could sell a whole train in kit form.

Yea. Its time for me to take my meds and go back to bed.

And as the plot thickens and the world turns … tomorrow will be an other day.
