So I have a Sierra installed in my K and I even have the factory chuff working…problem is…it just shuts down after a random period of time…turn the locomotive off and back on and its good again for another few minutes…any ideas?
Sounds like it’s timing out. Do you have the motor voltage being fed into terminals 7 and 8? Even if you’re not using any of the automatic controls, you need to make that connection so the board knows the motor is turning. Otherwise it thinks the loco’s stopped and will go into sleep mode. Cycling the power wakes it up and “starts the timer” again.

Bart Salmons said:I pulled out my booklets on all of the Sierra sounds and Guess on the steam there is no way of turning off the Auto Shut like the diesels have. Only finding it in the Diesels books on page 18 , Step 5 to disable the Auto shut down mode. If disabled it will keep the sounds running. " That's until the batt. goes down."

I guess the Steam Eng’s has so many thing in the booklet that can be running when just setting there .
I’m using a 1.5 amp. Hr. Jel-cel batt. in my steam Eng’s. and it running for a long time on one charge with all of the extra setting in have set for.
But, left standing for 2 min. it will shut down if not injecting voltage in the tracks or as Kevin suguested Terminals /pin 7 & 8 needs some voltage, a sec. or so to start the 2 min timer in the Sierra board again. I guess that is a safety thing for there boards?
The other thing is make sure you set your start voltage on page 21, Step 3. That controls most of other steps to work right.
Hope this helped some.
Hi Bart.
You didn’t tell me (or I wasn’t paying attention) it was a Sierra sound you would be using when I supplied the R/C stuff.
The Sierra does not like reading a pwm signal and must have the Opto coupler pcb. # SSI-12v5. That eliminates the Sierra battery and prevents it from shutting down.
This explains how to wire it. http://rcs-rc.com/PDF/SOUNDv3/PRO-Series-Sierra.pdf The chuff signal stays the same.
I am away in Melbourne but will send you one as soon as I get back home in 10 days.
