Siding for Caboose-Styrene?

So I’m thinking of Up-sizing an Aristo Classic Caboose to Fn3…think I will just laminate siding and cut bigger windows and lose the Cupola on top…what size styrene siding should I use? I went to the LHS yesterday, NOTHING.>>>>>>unless ur looking to build in N Scale…I’d like vertical siding and if I may be so bold, maybe even an Item number?

I use Evergreen scribed styrene, either 1/8" or 3/16" spacing, depending on what I’m after. I don’t have a stock number handy, but it should be on their web site.

thanks K! Hey hows the new kid?

Doing great. Sleeping (almost) through the night already! Now, if I could only remember to get to bed before 2AM… (Drawback of working until 11) Back to the siding, I’ve been experimenting with that permanent two-sided tape that Jack Verducci wrote about in GR a few issues back. I haven’t done a car side yet (though I’ve got a caboose on the drawing boards right now), but I’ve used it to laminate embossed styrene onto some locos I’ve been working on, and it seems to hold up very well. I actually don’t know if the stuff I’m using is the same stuff Jack used, but I found it at Michael’s. It’s 1" wide, and comes on a roll. The backing is red, so it looks like a roll of red masking tape. The same company also sells two-sided adhesive sheets which I plan on using for a roof in the near future. We’ll see how it holds up over time, but from what I can tell, it’s good stuff. It’s a heck of a lot easier to deal with than spray adhesive. BTW, here’s a shot of the Evergreen styrene on a B’mann box car…

That looks interesting, Kevin.

Can you provide some more details on that roof?

could that be #4188?

it has .188 spacing which according to their conversion chart is 3/16" …sorry for the elementary question, I’m a woodworker!

Caboose? this should be interesting!

and the adhesive, I’ll go back and find that article, I dabble in picture framing (can only dabble with 4 kids) so I may be able to find something similar that would pay-out of my Tape Gun?

Found this:

but I think I’ve been disqualified?

“For experienced model builders.”

or this, it’s not “V” Grooved?

D’oh. I’m not paying attention at all here. The scribed siding IS available on the Internet. I used EVERGREEN SCALE G Scale 269-14602 Car Siding 12"x24" With .160" Spacing (1 Per Package) when I built these:

I got it from Internet Trains…and I have sworn I will never do business with them again. They charged my credit card the day I ordered and didn’t ship for weeks. I’m trying to remember some other issues I had with them, but once again my failed memory bails out another company. Unfortunately, my favorite supplier http://www.hobbylinc.com/index.htm (cheaper prices and quick delivery) didn’t stock this the last time I checked. They also did not carry the 24" strips that I got from Internet Trains.

I’m almost in full attention mode now. IF it were me, I’d consider just using the base of the caboose, and then build up the body you want in wood. You could use Ozark scribed wood siding, or you could build it up with individual boards, kind of like what I did with my logging caboose: http://www.jbrr.com/html/logging.html

Mike Williams, of this group, gets his siding from someone whom I forgot.
It is wood sheets.
Perhaps he’ll read this and chime in.

Here’s a link to the construction of the market car. The roof is Kleenex “welded” to styrene sheet with solvent cement.

Thanks Ken!

I for some reason have a hard time with Caboose website?

With it’s small print and large list of items, it is hard sometimes to find what your looking for.

This is the stuff I usually look for… V-GROOVE SIDING .188in SP 1/ .040 THICK SKU: 02694188

I just ignore the scale…

sorry for the late fix-but the caboose in question is an Aristo Bobber…not a Classic, sorry for the confusion!

I really like what Shawn did with his Bachmann Bobber and thought I’d give it a go at a little larger scale?!?!??!?!?!!

again up-sizing windows and doors and tossing the cupola? maybe only using one end for a platform and door…

Kevin,
I just read through the thread about the market car and bookmarked it. Marvelous job on something out of the ordinary. Thanks for documenting it, it is definitely on my to do list now.
