My oldest son Aaron decided to go back and finish his degree in design at Drexel University. This is his mid-term packaging design project. I’m kind of proud of him

After working for 3 years as a Pizza Delivery guy, and another 2 at a boring dead end paper-pushing job at a life insurance company, Aaron came to the realization that his future was on a path he wandered away from 5 years ago. He says he was inspired last summer while looking down into Canyonlands National Park. I think he made the right decision. Jon

This isn’t the same guy that comes to Fred’s with ya, is it?

What course is he taking at Drexel?

Oh and BTW, what the hell is that stuff?

Nope - This is my older son Aaron - he’s 31. Matt, who comes to Canada is 16, still in High School.

The degree program at Drexel is in Graphic Design at the college of Media Arts & Design of Drexel University http://www.drexel.edu/westphal/

OK, as to the stuff - I’m not into Fratailian and all that other Starbucks kind of stuff, but I think Chai is a type of tea. The package represents several products in a Chai kit. I don’t know the specifics.

Thanx, Jon…I was drawin a blank as to Matt’s name…

Yea, Drexel’s a damn fine school. Did some telecommunications work for them back in the 80’s when I was in engineering…

That’s really top-notch packaging design!

I worked in graphic design for a few years but never had enough training to be really good at it, and found I preferred illustration anyway.

A few corrections and fill-ins from Aaron.

This was his Final project, not the mid-term. He got his grade today and aced the course.

Details of the package…

Masala Chai is sweet, spiced Indian tea with milk. The big canister is loose tea, the little canister are spice mixes and the little packet is tea filters (like make-your-own teabags) to mix everything in for brewing.

Thanks for looking.

Jon

Congratulations to both Jon and Marilyn. Amazing at how good of grades a person can get if you care for what you are doing.

Very cool! (Both the design and going back to school to finish the degree.) Next trick question–is that an actual product that will hit store shelves? Allison’s a Chai tea drinker, and this would be a cool stocking stuffer.

Thanks Kevin. To answer your question, No. It is a make-believe product, for now anyway

Interesting that just about the time that Arron got accepted to go back (which was no easy task as there are rarely openings in the senior class) I made the final payment on the 10 Yr. PLUS loans I took out to help him with the first 5 years.

You have my parents’ sympathies. No sooner did I graduate then my sister decided to return to finish her degree. Oh, the timing.

My second child has finished her teaching degree and is teaching 1st grade in Wenatchee, WA. My third child is finishing her senior year at WSU. She has applied to the Veterinary Medicine School there at WSU. Don’t know how I’m going to fund that one.

Gentlemen,

I’m very glad that your “off-springs” are continuing to educate themselves, but where does the responsibility end? I hope they expect to pay you back.

Our daughter will complete her degree this February. I am imagining her two children will attend the graduatoin ceremony, along with her husband. If we are invited, I’m sure we will, also. It was financed and paid for by her employeer that will benefit from her extra training and degree. I consider that that is correct as I provide training for employees at the marina and pay for that as long as it is job related.

Our son, the Marine, has his education paid for by those he served. He served his time, proudly, and the education was part of the package. I don’t believe pounding sand and defending this Nation can be considered a Government give away.

I will go for annual certification and training in January. This will be paid for by the company. All of the training at the many Universities I’ve attended has been paid for by those that I’ve worked for. Sometimes there has been a condition of continued employment for a certain amount of time, but not money out of my pocket if I got good grades. It certainly was and is an incentive to take the training seriously.

There should be no free ride.

Steve, my wife worked 16 years for a Veterinarian, the Air Force paid for his education, training and the experience for him to start his own practice. I know the phone number for a recruiter if that will help.

Sometimes it just doesn’t sink in. I have one that I have to keep reminding that I’m not “Daddy National Bank”.

You're not? Sigh.

Ric, I won’t have any trouble finding a recruiter. It’s just that I’m not sure I could stand to see one of my children as a doggie or a zoomie!
