The thing that struck me most about the clip was the big cultural difference between the west and the Middle East. In Iraq, throwing a shoe is the worst insult you can come up with, and apparently the shoe thrower is a hero now, but for Americans it’s puzzling and slightly comical. You can see Bush is mostly just kind of puzzled by it, and Americans are mostly laughing about the actual shoe throw, whatever they may think of the Iraq war itself.
What would an American with the same motives do instead of throwing shoes? I think either just yell insults or hit the guy. Throwing shoes just seems goofy, and it seems to kind of dishonor the thrower, doesn’t it? It’s not very manly. It’s not going to do much harm, the best outcome would still leave you, the thrower, walking home in your socks. Does it still count if you bring an extra pair of shoes, and throw them? Or do you have to to toss the shoes you’re wearing?
