Shingles

Whats the best way to stain scale shingles…before installation or after?. I have several hundred to stain and looking for ideas on how youguys have done it in the past…

Wood shingles, I assume. I toss them into a can of stain and leave them overnight. Make up a bag out of aluminum window screen to hold them. You’ll need a rock or some lead weight to hold the bag into the stain, as the shingles will want to float. The next day, take them out, and spread them out to dry.

Mine are put on raw. If they are cedar, they will gray up nicely in one summer.

Speaking of stains… when I first started my layout, I tried using wood stains on the stripwood prior to building trestles, etc. All the glued joints soon fell apart. Has anyone else had trouble gluing stained wood?

If it makes any difference, the brand I used was Minwax.

Thanks Guys…These are for my Daughters 1/2/ scale doll house…

i think, it depends what kind of stain one uses.
stained with alcohol and ink i never had problems glueing after staining.
using soluted shoewax, the glue did not hold.
