Large Scale Central

Sheepherder's Wagon

Built a sheepherder’s wagon for the layout.

I used a GME kit and modified it to appear a little more modern. Added rubber wheels instead of wooden spoke wheels and metal roofing instead of canvas. Going for an early 1950s look.

I’ll weather it when I get to the Colorado layout next month. I’ll also add a smoke pipe in the back.

It should look great in this scene:

Nice build Matt

Good Job. I’ve seen several that don’t look that good.

Yep. There’s one that I see in Bayfield from year to year that is in really rough shape. But it’s still in use. I wonder how old it is?

Very nice! Reminds me of one I saw in Nevada a few years ago.

Was going to insert a “Brokeback” joke in here, but I’m too lazy today…

Nice model BTW

Is that an early AirStream? Or is it a Tinker Caravan ?
It will look great in that scene. Nice.

Forgot to show the steps.

This is the first time I’ve ever worked with rivet decals. They were a lot easier to use then I thought they would be. So if anyone is looking to try some out I’d recommend them.

I used “O” scale rivets available through Micro-Mark…needed some other things and the rivet decals helped me get to free shipping

That looks great. Would tha be a place for the herder to stay while watching the sheep?

Def not as nice as an AirStream. Yeah I’d call it a tinker caravan. I based it off of some real sheep wagons I found on Google images. Of course all the real ones seem to be super filthy. So I’ll be sure to weather mine appropriately.

Yep, where the herders stay. Just like a modern day RV. Although no amenities other then a stove and a bed.

Here’s a real one. I like the solar panel:

Vic, that’s baaaaad.

Nice wagon, but I wouldn’t want to live there.

Never knew sheep herder’s had special wagons…learn sumthin new everyday…

Are they moved by vehicle or horse? or both?

Sheepherders out here used to take their sheep from the vineyards around Cucamonga to the sierras every year, about a 150 mile walk. But since they were “modern,” they used old travel trailers. I really like the solar panel.
That’s a nice build.

Moved by vehicle nowadays.

Nice addition to your scenery Matt
