I thought those with an affection for geared steam might enjoy this 1963 movie of two Shays on the Graham County RR from over in the North Carolina mountains.

Nice. From age of the automobile and the way the people are dressed, I’d say early 60’s. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Ric,
Good guess since Doc already posted that it was from 1963!
Hey , Joe , we are all allowed senior moments !!!

I just love that track. I want to do some track like that on an HO module, but I would think my club would have kittens if I did.
Well, Gentlemen, right now I’m sat on the bench outside the back of our mud hut here in deepest East Anglia, watching three Shays going around my little track.
Two are electric, and one is a live-steamer, and two are going forwards and one going backwards, so I can see and appreciate all them wiggly bits a’flappin’ around.
I love my Climax and my Heisler, too, but if you’re into narrow gauge and you don’t gots a Shay, you ain’t into narrow gauge.
If the thing hadn’t been needed to haul lumber at the time of its invention, it would have been necessary to invent it anyhow, just for the spectacle and spectator enjoyment.

I’ll second that!
Tac, yes the Bachmann Shay lead to my downfall from the original plan for the P&CSRR. That was the first locomotive I bought that didn’t fit the original plan. But I just HAD to have it. Climaxes are my favorite, but Shays are very close second choice, for me that is. Your mileage may vary. MSRP, tax and title not included.
Great video! That shay was really moving along much faster than I thought they usually ran. It must have been going down hill or maybe it was that the spark arrestor had popped off?
I also love my Climax and Heisler but my 38 ton 2 truck shay is extra special. I oiled them yesterday afternoon and put each on rollers to distribute the oil and it is amazing watching all those linkages and bits flopping around. Bachmann sure did a great job with the details.

I agree!
Tom keep them video’s a coming!
