I need the universal joint used between the Bachmann 3 truck Shay locomotive and the water tank/tender. Has anybody printed the complete joint, or know of a source for the joint?
Bill,
If i had a sample i could make you a 3d print in an ABS type material on a sla machine.

I have samples of the various parts. Bachmann also has most.
Not sure exactly which of the various parts in this connection is needed
Stan
The universal joint I need contains the same parts as those used on a later model 2 truck Shay with one modification. The only difference is the component attached to the cylinder drive shaft. I will remove and disassemble a joint from an existing 3 truck Shay. I will send you the parts if you send me your address.
I would to get 8 of the printed units. I plan build 3 versions of a 4 truck Shay.
I was unable to find any parts for the Large Scale Shay drive train in the Bachmann parts web site. Did I miss something?
Bill, have you been through these pages? First is for 3-truck, then 2-truck. But yeah they’re meager on the drive train parts, at least the 2-truck.

I did search through the Bachman parts store. The universal joint, parts for it, I need aren’t available.
Bill
The problem is that we have no idea what part you need.
In a bachmann universal joint there are 4 parts on each half 3 of which are the same. That means the part you need could be any one of the 5 unique parts.
Most of these parts were listed in the Climax section of the bachmann Website but apparently only 2 of the 5 parts are still in stock. I assum ( but without a photo this is likely only an assumption) that your broken part is one of the 3 plastic parts. You can purchase an entire truck that has the required parts but that a tad expensive is you only need one or two parts
Please note that ther are 2 small screws holding the two outside pieces of the universal joint together. Removing these screws ans seperating the joint can also help determine which part neds to be replaced.
I have all these parts I can loan Al but we really neeed to know which part is broken on your shay. If you could share a photo that would clearly help.

Bill,
i am awaiting a reply from you. i received your parts in a shredded first class envelope and do not know if i have everything. in the mean time i have modeled the two parts that were broken, possibly in shipment. one question i have is there are two alignment pins, and i found there respective holes, but the holes for the screws are counter Bored on both sides.I would think that one side should be a smaller hole.
Al P.
I must have mistaken and included the old rings for the joint. The old Bachman approach was to use small rivets to fasten the rings together. The later and current approach is to use 1.5 mm x 5.8 mm Phillips head screws to fasten the rings together.
Should I send a set of the rings and screws? Are the other parts OK?
Bill,
Check your private messages please.
Al P.
Finally was able to see mail. All of the pieces were there. Only problem is that I sent the wrong rings. The rings I sent used the old Bachman approach of rivets to hold the rings together. I think I sent another message about the use of small screws to fasten the rings together.
Is there something else broken or missing?
Bill,
I have two screws you supplied. I can make adjustments to the holes for the screws.
so you need the two other parts as well? i will work on them when i get a chance.
Al P.
I do need the other parts for the joint.
When you have files for all the parts, I will 7 of the universal joints.
First test prints done.
i need to reorient parts in the printer for better results but all fit together.
Al P.
Looking forward to testing the new joints!
Bill, I’ve been following along this thread with some interest, due to the challenges of these parts in both dimensional and strength properties.
If anyone can design and produce the proper and functional 3D printed part, Al’s the guy. He has professional-grade printing equipment, and long professional design experience in this hobby.
I look forward to seeing how all this plays out.
Regards,
Cliff
Bill, check your PM Please.
