Shay cab removal

Any tips on removing the cab from a 2 truck Shay (original run),
Thanks

A hammer, hatchet or cinder block perhaps?

I think Roo has the best answer.

I looked at mine pretty closely over the weekend with the thought of removing the cab to re-wire the original cab light. I found 4 screws outside the frame rails in the cab corners. Since I wasn’t sure that was all and I didn’t want to mess with all the stuff going into the cab from the boiler I decided to cheat and surface wire the lamp.

There is an exploded view drawing on the Bachmann website.

Thanks Rooster, I am about ready to try that .

Jon,
Right, four screws in the corners and it should lift off based on all the information I have but it doesn’t.
This is a first run unit from96-97 but the cabs should all be the same. I have seen reference to small tabs but nothing positive and I sure don’t see them. The exploded view doesn’t show any tabs at all.

Since this is an older unit and has been worked on before (by others) there is a good possibility that something may have been added like gluing it to the boiler inlet because that is where it is solidly attached.

There are 4 screws under the edge of the roof, 2 front and 2 in back. Remove them and the roof lifts off and it is easy to change the cab light. The light bracket has tough contacts that run in the cab wall, all you have to do is find the right 2 wires in the fire box to hook to.

Well, there is probably the rub. I believe I cut those wire when I ‘restored’ it 5 years ago. I just did a surface wiring job. With black shrink wrap you need to look close to find it.

Re yours; If it’s second had there is a good chance it was glued to get it to fit right at some point. Go with the brick!
