Large Scale Central

SHASTA PACIFIC, all operations ceased

Well at least outdoor operations for the next few days. The only snow plow that the line owns is an old “bucker” that is temporarily out of service while it’s trucks are being used to support another under construction M of W car. Besides this is California, were aren’t supposed to have to use plows.

!

Cold and wet morning.
Rick

Oh, I don’t know about that Rick. Sitting in the warm and dry Pacific Street Cafe in Roseville this morning, I saw a UP engine pushing a flanger up into the Sierra. I don’t think it went up there for a day in the sun!

Weather guessers think five to ten feet of snow at Lake Tahoe by Monday.

Nice pics!

Hey Rick, nice pics! My son is leaving tomorrow morning from Santa Rosa and flying to Denver to warm up:)

Oh come on Rick thats just a little dusting. We got 7" of snow on Thursday and maybe another 6 to 8" this coming Sunday. If nothing else we’ll have a “WHITE” Christmas.

Merry Christmas.
Chuck

Maybe a White Christmas in California?..who’d a thunk it…

Nice shots
Woke up to a dusting of snow an temps in the 20’s over this way and looks like a snowstorm for Christmas Eve/Christmas day. This is common for these parts.

Great shot. All it needs is a train  Ralph

Ralph beat me to it - That shot has fantastic forced perspective and the perfect amount of snow to look real.

I agree, there are a few shots I had to do a double take to figure out if they are real.

As for the snow, wish we had some we could use it.

Hi Guys,

Glad you liked the pictures. The snow all rained off today.

We actually do get a lot of snow here in the north state, it is just that, where we live at the north end of the valley the elevation is less than 600 foot ASL so we only get a few inches a couple times a year. Within in an hours drive west, north, or east we have the Coast range Mts, the Siskiyou’s, and the Cascades/Sierra’s and they all get plenty of snow. We really enjoy looking up at it and not having to deal with it ;):).

Nice shots Rick! I’ll bet you get more snow there than we get right here on the southern Oregon coast. If we get a dusting 2 or 3 times it’s unlikely more than one will be snow. The other couple will be collected hail that looks like snow but will be frozen ice that immobilizes switch points and clogs flangeways. Even then it seldom lasts more than half a day on the railroad, even less on the ground. The raised benchwork on the POC acts like a bridge in that it takes longer to thaw than on solid ground.

Only once have I been able to get outside quick enough to set out some rolling stock on some sidings so they’ll realistically collect snow on and around them for good photos. Nice though to get eye level snow shots without getting your knees cold and wet isn’t it?

Your railroad sure looks neat though in all that scale snow. Love it! The barn shot especially. It reminds me of a shot I took years ago in Colorado during a snow storm of a barn and corral with a horse in it. The colors were almost identical to yours.

Our part of the state isn’t going to get any of the white stuff. In fact I started laying track to the gold mill today.
