Tac, the cylinders are 33deg opposed so each cylinder is timed at 1/3 the rotation. The valve setting is the same as a ruby. Start with the first cylinder and work your way to the front.

What happened? My friend eccentrics wore out and we still have to work on them…His limps around the track.

My 3-c Shay has started stuttering in place of the previously smooth progress it used to make around the track. I looked closely and found that when in gear, and by rotating the crankshaft by hand, the reference marks on the valve stems do not ‘touch’ the valve chest when they should, neither in forward or reverse gear, and as a result, the clyinders seem out of time.

I’ve never timed a Ruby, so this will be a learning curve for me.

Sure, I can pay one of the AccuCraft mavens here in yUK to do it, but the nearest one is over a hundred miles away - a long way in yUK - and shipping it by mail would cost a small fortune. I missed the opportunity to deiver it by hand at a recent show that we attended in Mid-Wales, and won’t be over that way for a few months yet.

I’m pretty certain that I can do it myself, given a set of instructions, and thereby save myself a couple of hundred $$$ at least.

So any help you can give me, with regard to doing it myself, would be greatly appreciated.

TAC,

In order to end up with the best tune of each cylinder I disconnected the other two and timed each individually.

Good to see you posting again Andre`

Welcome back! We waved at you while we were over at the Leupold factory in June!

Tac can you take a pair of needle nose or tweezers and try to wiggle the piston valve eccentric up and down? Im thinking that the eccentrics are worn and you are not getting the full travel anymore. You can try leaving the eccentrics along and loosed the retaining nut on the valve and spin it off the valve rod until the line touches the block when the eccentric is at the top of the stroke. You will need to adjust each ecentrif advance a bit but you will loose reverse completely.

Only option is new eccentrics to get the lost motion back again.

Jason - all three are pretty tight - not more than about half a millimetre free motion.

Thanks for the suggestion, though, I’ll work on it. I’m loathe to bother Cliff again, he has been such a great help to me on other AccuCraft matters over the years that I’m sure I’ve outstayed my welcome over in Union City!

Then id start by getting the valve lines to touch the block. Check the nuts, Ive seen some work loose over time…
