I had not tied the idea of lagging maintenance and crumbling infrastructure to railfanning; those photos do give one something to consider.

Thanks for posting the link to a very interesting coverage of a minor train wreck. I’ve seen a few of them first hand. Quite a lot of energy contained in all that weight traveling at even a moderate speed. Makes a mess when something goes wrong.
That was scary …I almost thought it was my RR and the wife had the leaf blower out again.
