Large Scale Central

Second attempt at weathering

I’ve been sick for a week. Didn’t even feel good enough to mess with any trains until this morning. So, since I was feeling a bit better I thought I’d try out weathering another car.

I like how this one turned out. The panels actually look like dirty aluminum. I only managed to get one side done before running out of the dullcoat. I’ll have to see if my wife can pick some up on her way home from work tonight.

Trying to get a decent picture inside is hard. So, here on the left is what I did today next to an un-weathered car.

And here’s a comparison shot of the two cars I’ve done so far. My first attempt is on top.

I’m going to go over the first attempt car again, and try to lighten the panels up a bit.

Here’s some outside shots. I was afraid the weathering wouldn’t be noticeable outside, but it looks o.k.

This is only my second attempt at weathering. Maybe one day I’ll be good at it. I still need to weather the trucks and wheels on both cars. I might give that a shot this weekend.

Also, here’s the link to the full size pictures. They are being cut off again.

I like it. Looks much better than the first. After just a couple you get the hang of it.

Matt,

I will second that, much improved. I still struggle with weathering in large scale, and have a lot to do, but starting with less is better, you can always add.

Looks good!

Nice job, Matt

See, it gets easier!
Good job!

Yes, I like version 2 better. The dust/rust on the panels looks better to my eye.

I don’t know what you used, but that second attempt looks right on! The cars I see go by up here, have a even grimy tinge. You can see thru it. It looks very close to what you captured.
I’ve been pondering doing this to my cars. I didn’t have the nerve! If I was this good, I’d move on to the motive power next!

very nice!

looks great!!!

Great job

Wow, thanks so much for the kind words guys! Seriously, made my evening!

This is only the second time I’ve done this, so I’m still trying to figure it out. Oddly enough, I find it fun.

I lightened up the first attempt car, and it looks better. It’s going to take a while, but I think I can rework it and it will look better. I watched around an hour of videos on youtube of coal porter trains before I did the second car. I think that helped, instead of just picking a picture of a dirty one. Like what I did for the first car.

My wife picked up the wrong can of dull coat, so I can’t finish anything tonight. So, tomorrow morning I’ll go get some. Once I’m done I’ll repost pictures of the first car. It already looks better, just hope it’s not too far gone. ooooops. Lesson learned. lol.

Joe, I’m not ready for the motive power yet. And I doubt I’ll ever weather my chessie engine. Now, my csx sd40-2, it will be grimy. I actually found some pictures of it online, same road number too!

Distant Cousin Matt

I thought about that when you suggested it on the first post but it doesn’t hurt to ask and she made the proper attempt!

Enjoying the pics

Great work on the second car. Are you freelancing things? Following a book? Online guide?

Cousin David, she tried. She didn’t even ask what I needed it for. I did take a picture of the can and text it to her, but in her defense those cans all look a like. I need to get out of the house anyway. I’ve been quarantined for a week now. lol.

C Z, Thanks! Yeah, just looking at real cars on youtube and google images and trying to replicate it as close as I can.

Two thumbs up !! Looks great !!

very nice Matt on the second attempt. Weatheris is a tough gig. I haven’t had to do it in G yet but did much of it in HO and you do get better. I live by BNSF main line and get to see plenty of cars and all I can says is go out and take pictures and use them right next to you when you weather.

That second one looks perfect.
Don’t worry about the other one being really dirty it has just been in service longer.

I Like it!

Thanks guys! I hope to get some more time this weekend and maybe do the wheels/trucks. I have been trying to re-work the first car. Once I get a little farther along with it, I’ll post some pics. I’ve just not had much time to work on it.
