Sculptamold

Hey here is my latest video. I know most of you work outside but this may help somepeople…

Thank you. That was very interesting. It looks and behaves exactly like sculptamold at a much cheaper price. I am wondering if other plasters would work? It is difficult to find hydrocal in this part of Tennessee.

Doc Tom

Ty,

So what would you say the pros and cons of both your glue/sawdust mixture vs the homemade sculptamold. I was all about using your glues and saw dust method but this looks like a great product at a reasonable price.

Tom,

Plaster should work just fine with this . Hydrocal is just a little harder. I think the Brand name Sculptamold is just plain plaster mix…

Devon,

I was all set to use the wood/glue mix for the whole layout. But I am all about saving time. I did the small section around the trestle bents and they took several days to dry. Well when I thought this Idea up i had no idea if it would work. Once I tried it I am hooked. It applies the same as the sawdust/glue but is set in about 10 minutes. I did a whole 8’x 1 ’ section in under an hour and was able to apply ground cover( dirt/zip texturing) immediately instead of waiting a coupe days. I think the glue /sawdust mix has its place. If i were doing another modular layout I think i would stick with the sawdust/glue. It would be more durable over time with all that moving. With a stationary layout the Sculptamold would be the way to go for convenience.

Ty

Thanks Ty,

I am glad you came up with this new plan before I started on my indoor. It wont be modular so no moving but I do plan for i to be played with both by me and little hands. So being more durable than just plain plaster will be nice but the workablity and time seems worth going the route of the homemade sculptamold. I wasn’t to trhilled with waiting days (I am impatient) either. This seems to have the best of both worlds.

Home made sulptamold update. I was trying to figure out how to slow the curing of the hydrocal and ran across this in a unrelated forum .If you are mixing this up or any plaster mixture you can add a few drops of Lemon juice to the mixture and it will prolong the curing time. I have used this on the homemade sculptamold and on hydrocal just by itself. Just hope my wife does not miss the lemon juice…
