Scratch building water tower

Very nice project so far!

Sorry all. Life kind of got in the way and it was easier for me to keep working on this project than it was to keep uploading pictures. Well, where did I leave off…oh I know… I added a water gauge while trying to figure out what to do with the water spout…

I also figured out what I was going to do with the spout. I used a brass tube, cut it with a dremel cutting wheel in the certain locations and then bent it to form the end of the spout (and to have it tapered a bit). I then wrapped this with the thin metal that I was able to embros some rivets (you’ll see this better when I get the completed project pictures posted).

That’s a nice looking spout.

Any ideas on counter weights and chain pulleys?

Dave,
Yes, got an idea. I plan to use some small chains run over a brass bar while using fishing weights as the counter weights.

While the glue drys, and I think how to get the water spout attached, I moved onto the roof. I needed a topper, so I used a creamer container with a simple wire in the top as a lighting rod.

Hmmm. The picture didn’t get included. Here is the roof…

Now that the roof is done, I was able to rig up the chains for the water spout. A little weathering on the water spout so it wasn’t so bright and shiny and a final coat of UV clear matte and it was off to the layout.

Now that the railroad has a water tower, the steam engines are back out and running - I guess they ran out of steam and needed some water. Someone forgot to look at the gauges and were enjoying the ride too much :-).

Here #16 pulls in for a fill up…

…and then #208 backs up to get its drink. I think they just couldn’t wait to get a drink since the backed up kind of close.

Thanks to this forum for keep on posting their builds and pictures and their problem solving. You all just give me too many ideas (and therefore projects) that I just can seem to get to them all. Discipline is what I need, and just one step at a time. The next project (which already got started) is to finish rehabbing a passenger and luggage car. Just need to put windows in, with people, wire up the lighting, put metal wheels on, make and put on the custom decals. one step at a time…till next time keep on rolling down the track.

Matt

Nice work!

Looking good… nice work.

Thanks fellows.

Here’s one I made years ago. The tank is popsicle sticks. I wrapped a jar with 1 mm styrene, glued the popsicle sticks to it then slid the jar out.

What are those 2 white things between the tracks?..or did I miss sumthin…

I think those are interplanetary gateways.

Those two white things between the tracks are glass ‘glow drops’ from Sandwich Glass Studio - on Cape Cod. They glow at night.

Great creative talent in all, mine is just an automated Aristo.

That water tank came out really nice Matt. I like the topper it looks rather gothic. Nice details you added there it makes mine look rather shabby. LOL

So what will be next? you satisfied your locos thirst how about their hunger? you might need to build a coal tower and then maybe a sand drying building…

I do like that tank, good job.

Thanks Todd! Now I’ve got two more projects on the list :-). 1 step forward, 2 steps back?
Those are good ideas. I’ll consider the coaling station first. I’ve got a jar full of fish filter charcoal (or whatever it is) that I’ve been saving to represent coal. It would be nice to use it and to stop saving it. I’ll see how I can work this up on the project list.

Thanks for the comments and feedback.

I’m surprized you didn’t pick up on the “Glow Drops”

I was thinking of this while this thread was going on!

Sean the shape of that can would make for a nice water tower. Just Don’t turn on your track power with that sitting there.
