Wow Noel those are really nice water tanks. They make mine look shabby but cut me some slack it was one of the first things I built.
We all started out from scratch like you so you are doing fine. We just showing what you can add with the real water with like yours stuff laying around or stuff you can find at a hardware store cheap… We are not in to close up detail on this stuff. but from a few feet they look like you got it new or built it from a kit… The best thing of this hobby and others is you build it your self and that’s is what counts…
Keep them photos coming.

I’m interested in how you are going to make the dounspout, as I am in need of one for a tank I was give!
Sean - I made my spout from brass & copper- there are photos and plans for the water tower on my web page here:

Thanks David
That is what I’m looking for,BUT… I don’t think mine will come out as nice as yours.
Sean - if I were doing it again today I would design it on my computer and 3D print it!
Much easier!

Gave it a shot this AM, Sean - lots of options - may try a redesign & print later on today.

If your going to use thicker staves you will need to put a slight taper to the side to prevent a gap in-between the boards.
Hey Doc, so where is the beer tap on the car?

Interesting…
Thanks all for your ideas. Dave B., I did check out your water tower build before I started. Got some ideas from it.
Don W. Great idea of using the tape to keep all the planks in line and doing a “mass” gluing. I’m having fun doing them one at a time in sets of about 10 or so.
I’m about 3/4 done with the planking…
The spout ideas are making me think (I haven’t figured that part out yet). Using a 3D printer sounds fun (if you have one or access to one - not in my case). I’m thinking of using either some piping or drinking straws. I’m trying to stick with what I have laying around the house or recycle bin (where do you think I got the coffee can).

Ah Matt. We do the same here at the Shannon Car Shops. Our President, me, is a cheap bas person.
Matt what will you do about the height of the sticks to the coffee can?
When I built this tank for my fire fighting car I wrapped a peanut butter jar. I used very wide painters tape and stuck the sticks right onto it in a tight line then wrapped the jar. The wire was put around and tightened to hold it all together.

For your water spout look to copper pipe and fittings in the plumbing aisle at Lowes. It is cheap and looks good. Of course a tapered one like David posted looks most excellent.
Keep up the good work.

I plan to have a sloped roof for this with an overhang. I’m banking on the overhand to cover up the short sticks (and to allow me to open the top - for what reason, I don’t know, maybe to modify it later so it can hold water :-))
Well, I’m FINALLY done putting the planks on the side and have moved onto the support under the tank…
I think things are going to slow down until I can make a trip to the hardware store this weekend to look at piping and some stain or sealant for the outdoors, unless I can figure out something with what I have around the house - like drinking straws …oh wait, I might have some copper tubing, but I think it is too small.
Maybe I’ll move onto the roof and figure that out or get some of the other details figured out.
It’s been awhile. I had gone to the nearby local hardware store, and what I picked up in terms of copper plumbing didn’t work. I then realized that I had some soft/thin metal sheets (curtsey of Yogi) and made a spout that I think came out great for a first try:
Because this is soft metal and if I squeezed it with my fingers, it would lose its shape, I’m going to try to use other materials. In the mean time I did some weathering and put the tub on a stand. I left the one stand/tressel off so I can put in a ‘winter box’ (I think it is called that). I’ve got the box framed, just need to cover it.
Hope to get the winter box completed this week and I’ll post when I’ve got a bit more detail done.
Well, Matt a dented spout would look just fine!
You got that right Lou
Nice progress Matt
