Scratch Building Advice

Hi all. Does anyone have the driver diameter for Bachmann’s large scale Thomas? I’m looking at building a particular locomotive and I’m not sure which size drivers I’ll need. The locomotive I’m modeling is a French 2-4-0 from around 1860-70’s as seen here.

i don’t have that.
but i have an idea for you, wheels of 60mm (about 2 and a quarter inch)
bigger than the 2" drivers of the big hauler.
they come on a dummy loco, that is pushed by a motorized tender.

“Steaming Mary” from playmobil. no more new ones, only used over ebay.

You might try contacting Bachmann and asking on their site.

Also, isn’t that Emily, not Thomas?

They do sell large drivers for Emily.

I realized the B’mann big hauler is very close to the size I think will work. I’d like to use drivers that have more spokes so I think I should try and find the wheels to the Playmobil 4-4-0. (might be a bit difficult though)

Bruce, the Thomas wheels are very close looking to the locomotive in my photo. Emily’s drivers are too bit, probably better used if I was to build a Crampton 4-2-0. Also I think you can only buy the wheels and motor block as one unit from Bachmann, not individually.

I’m pretty sure that Thomas’s drivers are the same diameter as the Big Haulers. When I did Utility I went with Percy as the drivers were a little smaller. Also as for the spokes I’m pretty sure that the Big Hauler wheel counter weights are just plastic pop out inserts. Emily looks like a good starting point for the project if you scored another wheel set. However you didn’t specify what scale you were shooting for or if just going by eye like I do.

Good luck and we want progress pictures!

Oh I’m sorry the scale will have to be 1:32. Originally I was going to go for a hybrid like LGB does to match their carriages but unfortunately the size of the drivers in relation to the gauge of the track will make things more difficult to model.

I would have to guess by the pic that the drivers are around 80". That scales out to be 2 1/2" in diameter. Start looking for a Aristo Pacific motor block and build it around that.

i have one (early) big hauler, where the metalic ring fell from the plastic center.
to me it looks, as if the spokes and counterweight were made from one piece.
