And just you and me again , me old mate .
I was thinking of you whilst sat here in a pool of sweat thinking " how lucky is my mate Ric then, with all that cool water around him "
Blimey it’s hot here , about 88 according to my weather thingy . About 128 according to the sweat rolling down me corset . Send me a bucket of your best Marina water .
Mike
Mike,
I am about 2 mile sfrom the marina in the comfort of my home. It is 7:30 am and 72 degrees. We are expecting highs in the mid 90’s today and in the world of marina operations this is my longest day of the year. Tonight about 9:20 pm we will have our annual fireworks display about 1/2 mile outside the mouth of the marina on a point of land that sticks out in to the lake. With luck, I will be home by 11 pm and not have to go back out there. The US Army Corps of Engineers speculates there is normally about 85,000 people with in a 1/2 mile of the marina during the next couple of days, being the 4th of July weekend. High fuel prices and the fact that the 4th is falling on a Tuesday seems to have made it a bit quieter this year. I’ll know better on Wednesday. I stopped in to see the night watchman last night about 10 pm and he said our only seemingly rowdy group, a houseboat rental with young couples on it, was out of the facility for the night. No phone calls through the night so maybe they stayed out on the lake all night.
Hope you have a good day. During the heat of this afternoon, I hope to be hiding in the basement putting couplers on a crane I’m working on. I never really try to plan much and take enjoyable minutes when I can get them. That way there is no dissapointment.
That sounds interesting , the fireworks reflected in the lake .
I hope the weather stays decent for the celebrations . I believe you Americans are about to become 230 years old . Have a nice birthaday . I still reckon you wasted damn fine tea in that harbour .

Thought you might enjoy these photos Mike. I also live on a lake where we do fireworks over the water. Hundreds of boats gather for the show every year. My oldest son Aaron son wanted to take my digital camera. I warned that the wave action made it impossible to hold the camera steady enough for good photos. He sez “no problem, I’ll just move the camera on purpose for effect”. Here are the results… [url=jon.barnbeckplace.com/july4-1-1024.jpg]

Very Cool! Tell Aaron he did a good job.
It’s been about 103 here on the High Desert in California. At least it’s dry. Whatever you want to get done do it early in the motning or in the evening.
Fire and water do go together then .
Very pretty .

Good Morning Mike,
Its Saturday.
Where are ya?
Just got back from hospital , Martyn reacted badly to the painkillers . Good job he wasn’t driving .
He’s ok now , the effects have worn off a bit ,but it frightened the heck out of me when he collapsed .
Fortunately , he did no further damage . To himself or the furniture . Knocked several years off my life though , I reckon I shall only make 120 now .
See ya .
Cheers , Ric ,
Mike
I wondered if all was okay. A litle unusual for you not to be present for our Saturday morning chat. Tell Martyn, its time to be a good patient and “kick it down a notch”. oops, I guess that was a bad choice of terms. How about “knock it down a notch”.
Next Saturday, I will be with the boys and we will be hoisting one for you. Keep tuned, we should be able to communicate from here.
Martyn is a bit woozy from the poison, so when I said
"Ric says kick it down a notch " he replied “Kick who in the crotch ?”
I shall stay in my bedroom playing getting ratty with computers .
Sink that drink well , Ric .We ex service types have a certain reputation to maintain . Gad , Sir , make mine a Port .
Doesn’t matter which Port–any port in a storm heheheh . It’s catching , pain killer fever .
Cheers , Ric .
Nice to know someone was thinking of us .
Mike
…while you two young friends, were having your “Saturday morning chat”; I was deep into the start up of the party, and the preparations for the “Invasion”…we even had a standard gauge operation this Saturday. That will be the last SG operation for a while.
Today; Sunday; I actually mowed all the lawns…yes Ric; contrary to some reports, I do mow lawns on a “Tri-weekly”, or should that be a “Try-weakly” basis !
Ric, and Mike; if Ric can put up with my dusty-musty, and disorganised computer room…you guys can talk on Saturday morning if you care to, from here in Ottawa.
No, Ric…the computer up in the dinning room is not on line; it’s for the railroad, and is only used for “Rail-ops”.
Of course, if you have your laptop…just plug it in and have fun.
The big BBQ arrived in a trailer this afternoon. We will have it set up later in this coming week. The lamb and beef are ordered.
I’m taking Monday as a holiday, and heading to Kingston for a Malt Tasting…back on Tuesday morning early.
OK , you blokes --and Ric – you’d better not be reading this because you should be up to your ears in sweat and blood operating railway thingies .
I hope you are all enjoying your journey to a civilised country .
Mike
Morning Mike, sorry I missed last week. We were kind of busy, playing. But I will tell you I tried to make contact, the confuser was just slow at the hotel.
And so you should have been --playing trains that is .
I would never have forgiven you for going that far to play pooters .
I bet you’re tired out now . Nice tired , that is .
I envy you your obviously delightful trip to join an (almost ) equally delightful bunch of Trainiacs .
Mike
Yes, this morning I’m going through withdrawal as I know the OVGRS has a standard gauge operations scheduled for today. Our weather has been nasty for the last couple of days and many people are without power in the Greater St. Loiuis Area. Here, it has now turned 68 degrees and we have escaped any damage. I appreciate, count and give thanks for my blessings every day. Tired is a good word as we get back to the daily routine. Equipment is now all unpacked and recharging. I’ve had some minor readjustment of parts that must be corrected after the trip. 2000 miles bouncing around in a vehicle can challenge anyone’s modeling skills. Have a great day.
OK , Ric , so it’s Sunday .
I was out yesterday buying up half the shop in my favourite suppliers .
I got a new issue of an LGB loco ,and shall have to take pics for your perusal , meantime enjoy what remains of the weekend .
Mike
ps , this post is my second attempt , the first one disappeared at the same time as a large bolt of lightning crashed down outside . Funny stuff electricity .
Hi Mike,
Yesterday was National Marina Day in over 350 marinas in the United States. My day started at 5 am and we cooked and fed from 0730 until about 2pm. THe staff is telling me 340 burgers plus just baout as many hot dogs plus doughnuts, fruit trays, sausage and cheese, live music and a bunch of other stuff. By 4pm, I was shot and as much as possible, spent today recovering.
Sat at the hobby bench this afternoon and worked on a couple of items, but mostly vegetated. Been a very busy week, wtith the Faterh-in-law moving into assisted living on Monday and the parties at the marina to follow. Hoping to give more time to the trains and enjoying life after this.
Summer is now on the way out. One more big weekend at the beginning of September and then we can really relax. Have 4 of the Canadian Railroad friends coming to our house for an Ops Session on September 20th and then we all head to Marty Cozad’s for a weekend of debauchary and train running in the beautiful suburbs of Nebraska City, Nebraska. You know, I actually think our train club has a home show and an annual picnic before that.
I guess I better get busy, the thought of relaxing was probably enough to get me going again.
What good stuff did you buy? Always support your local hobby shop, if you can.
Hey , Ric ,
Last week I was hoping to get some photos of the stuff I got , but other things intervened . I got the new colour schemed Swiss Ge3/4 in Coop colours , and a couple of new demount wagons ,plus a works coach . I really must get round to putting some pics up , and stop finding other things to do . Like putting a new battery in the Jeep .The very hot weather knocked the stuffing out of it And me . That battery cost the equivalent of another LGB wagon , dammit . But I need the Jeep to go and get them . Catch 22 .
Funny thing about the battery , I was talking to Mo-reeese down in Lousy -annie about a funny fault on the Jeep , and he said the heat had got to the battery . Now , I’ve never come across that before , but wise old Mo-reese , he says "Young Morgin , y’all are gonna be need’n a noo battrie in y’old machine there boy " and by golly he was right . Sod it . Just ‘cos he’s rebuilding his Porsche , he thinks he’s an expert . Makes good jelly though . You there Moreese ? , ain’t seen ya here a while . It’s OK , we email each other , so I know he’s keepin’ an eye on things . Same as you , Ric , it makes life interesting to talk to people across the water . Us old farts can still learn --and still teach a thing or three ,too . I suppose your holiday season is starting to wind down a bit , it will get a bit quiet and you can concentrate on the real stuff , 45 mm between the rails . When I was stationed in the holiday areas we called the tourist “grockles” an old Cornish word . Dunno what it meant , but it wasn’t a compliment , that’s for sure . Driving around with their heads up their asses and blocking the roads . That’s one thing I don’t miss , but I do miss the Service life .
Ah , well , my keeper has just brought the dog bowl in , so I’d better go .
Keep yer feet dry , Ric ,don’t go near the water .
Riic, Mike…this is Fr.Fred, Reporting from Montrose Colorado…all is well…will be in Durango on Sunday afternoon…
