Satillite broadband

I live out in the sticks, no cable, no DSL, so satillite is my only option. The best I can get on dialup is 14.4K baud.

I’ve had earthlink forever, but their satillite service is 'way expensive compared to “Wildblue.” Has anyone had any experience with Wildblue? Their monthly service is about 25% less expensive, and the startup costs are less than a third of earthlink satillite.

Will I loose in service?

SWMBO wants to save a few bucks, but I want reliable service primarily.

Steve,

I am using Hughesnet which used to be Directway. Looked at Wild Blue but the rates were more for the same useage.

Steve,

Hopefully I’ll be able to tell you next week. Folks from Dish Network are coming out Monday to see if I can get the signal for Wild Blue as well as for local networks. If so then they’re supposed to get me hooked up. We already have Dish Network for TV. Excellent service!!! We’re in a communication-deficit area here for sure. Only dialup with no DSL. Cable is…well no so hot here.

Wait a couple weeks and I’ll let you know. Just email me if I forget this post.

Mad Wolf,
My brother lives out in the sticks and has Hughes-net. He loves it.
(His opinion–I haven’t used it at his house).

I’ve had both Dish and now Direct for the tube. Both satisfactory service. SWMBO got pissed at Dish because they would not replace the remote that gave up the ghost so she canceled Dish and went to Direct. We both think that Direct gives a slightly better picture.

Earthlink uses the Direct/Hughes system. I guess that Wild Blue uses Dish?

hehehe to each his own Steve.

We had Direct TV and the picture was OK had a bit of interference now and then just enough you could see it was a clean picture. Lost signal and after several hours on the phone with tech support they say they’ll send someone out. Couldn’t get a tech out for three days they said. Day he’s supposed to show I take off work. He never shows. Seems he quit in the middle of the work day. Three days later they finally get another tech here. I take another day off. He works on it for an hour and we have signal again. He leaves. Two hours later its gone again! Direct TV says it will be a week before they get someone here.

Called Dish Network. Two days later I had all new equipment, all installed in three extra rooms and the original signal problem from Direct TV also found. Picture from Dish is FAR better than we had from Direct TV.

Shows what different experiences will do to customer choices doesn’t it?

Out of curiosity, what was the original problem? Bad coax somewhere that was overlooked?

I had DirectPC through Earthlink/Hughs and had service problems with them, billing problems and sales problems. Finally told them to take a hike and if I ever heard from them again I’d take them to court. I never want anything to do with Earthlink, Direct anything or Hughs. Fortunately where I’m at now I can get a land line. I will say that the majority (but not all) of the problem was with Earthlink’s end of the deal.

Greg,

Yep! When Direct Tv did the first install they ran unprotected cable under the deck. Rabbits chewed thru it and they never found it. Dish Network guy was running his cable and wanted to install conduit where it went under the deck. Asked me if we could pull a couple deck boards to ease the install. When we did we found the other cable. He was not impressed!

Andre’

Thanks Andre, by my asking what went wrong, I often learn something I had not thought of.

I’ve always been present during an install, and I am a firm believer in conduit! I’m pulling about 150 feet of 1/8" air line right now through a 100 foot conduit… it’s just about the limit since the stuff is so stretchy. All my power feeds are likewise in conduit.
