Just in time for the holidays, Porsche took the wraps off its 2013 Cayman, and while I am a 911 fan, this baby calls to me. Sure, it’s not as fast, even the S model. But it costs about a third less than a Carrera. Of course, winning Powerball is a given, so maybe I’ll still be dreaming of sugar plums, whatever they are. Happy Holidays, anyway.
I always thought the 911 was “less-than-attractive”, the boxter was ok…Then they released the Cayman…WOW! I seriously love this car! When the economy looks at least ‘stable’ I will have to take a serious look at one…Red is sweet, but mine will be silver!
Porsche could make the Cayman faster, a lot faster. They won’t because that would make the 911 an instant orphan. Just as GM will never produce a car to come close to the beloved Corvette. They both have a ‘king’, even though it might mean castrating the Prince to keep it that way.
I actually found this to be a fair article, and a good comparison (an older article, but it could be written about the two latest offerings just as well)…

You can get many Porsche models in 1:24 and if you wear your magnifier it will be just like the real thing - in a “G - way” of speaking.
Mark, you’ve got it exactly right. The 911 will always rule the Porsche roost, while the Vette will be Chevy’s King of the Hill (remember that campaign)?
BTW, the minute that the CEO of Porsche stepped of the stage after delivering his pep talk, what must have been a hundred journalists and photogs stormed the platform like the two Caymans (gray and yellow) were gonna melt or something. Pretty silly, 'cause when I strolled by later in the day, I practically had the place to myself. Of course, the show doesn’t open to the public until Friday, which may see a repeat of that mob scene. Oh yeah: the new Jag F convert and coupe, the Black Edition Mercedes SLS AMG “gullwing,” and the trick Vette, were pretty snazzy too.
H-J, you can also get certain Porsches–mostly race cars–in 1:12, which means ya won’t need a magnifier. And back in the mid-1970s, Tamiya had a 911 Turbo kit that was even bigger.

Yeah, I know but they don’t look so good with “G scale” (sic) trains. One stop on our railway is planned as the location where NA fans of muscle cars and other oddities congregate once a year. Add a '67 Mustang and a '70 Cuda with R/C and the race up the crazy mountain road can get started.
Joe - Sorry you didn’t win the Powerball. I didn’t either I had lots of plans for what would be left of that $550 Million after taking it in cash and paying the taxes. Heck, I would have been really OK with splitting it with that other winner. I figure they both will take home a bit over $60 million in cash after taxes. That would buy one of each of your show favorites and still have enough left to build the garage and pay for fuel.
I’m still partial to Corvettes especially the '63 split window. My brother had a '67 and hung on to it for a long time, into the 90’s. During a bitter divorce it met the business end of a baseball bat more than a few times. It would have been repairable, but like he said, it was no longer a virgin so he dumped it as-is.
Oh, he also drove a 60’s vintage Shelby Cobra owned by a friend. When I was 16 or 17 my buddy and I “borrowed it” one day when it was left home alone. It took us several hours to clean the brown stains from the seats after I ran it through the gears in a residential neighborhood and blew a stop sign at around 150
I wouldn’t mind one of those either :).
My brother had a 69 Z-28, Dual Quad 302. We used to race on Woodward and also Gratiot in Detroit.
It would eat up the Mopars and Fords.
He eventually blew it up on the West Coast and being broke, replaced the 302/4speed with a 350/auto. Sending the value right down the toilet

I’ve been looking for a Vette to add to my stable. My SSR is getting lonely.
Since I’m basically just a lazy cruiser, I’m looking for a 2008–2012. Paddle shift Auto, etc. They are out there, it’s nothing ever pops up locally. Here’s the SSR. Getting washed up after a run to Seattle and back.

John Bouck said:Lazy??? I don't know. Sticks are fun, but so is coming in first. No one can run a clutch in 1/100th of a second like the new paddle shifters do. I'm getting to old and slow to heal for all that racing anyway! :D

For you Vette guys, here’s a 1959 just like the one I owned before selling it for $1,400 as I prepared to ship out for Libya in 1962. Wish I had her now, because this one, which I ran across at an exotic car store in Costa Mesa, CA, costs $80,000.

Jon, speaking of Cobras, when I first moved to LA, one of my Buffalo Clutch Artist buddies came to visit. His uncle, who owned a Porsche/VW dealership in the Valley had a 428 Cobra (that’s the street version), so one night my friend and I went to a UCLA hangout called the Rat Fink to pick up chicks. Returning home late in the evening on Sunset Blvd, where the s-bends are, one of us (I’m not sayin’ who) took a very creative line on what is a 4-lane road, which fortunately was devoid of traffic. It was, as you so colorfully put it, one of those brown-seat moments. Man, that was a beast of a car!
Mark, what you missed: Mercedes Black Edition SLS, which doesn’t have to be black. It just has the killer engine and stuff. I drove last year’s version in Newport Beach earlier in the year and it will deliver one of those brown-seat adventures.

Porsche 904 vintage racer. I spoke to one of my Canadian auto journalist friends who said he used to own one of these back in the day. He sold it for $6,500. The car traded hands over the years, but was recently sold to Bobby Rahal, who, I’m told paid something like $1.6 very large for it.

Oh, and I changed my mind…Yellow please.

Me, I could not even get in or out of one these cars! The old body just doesn’t bend that way any more! Had a Frat Brother who had a Vette, the glass body one back in the mid 1950’s. The one my wife would let me buy would be in a Ford model of (can’t think of the name!), her brother-in-law had one in Red and after we had washed it he give me the keys and says go drive it around and dry it off! Me being 18 or so at the time! Man was that a long time ago!

Caymens are very nice, though I’m still aiming for the Fiat 500 Abarth, makes alot more sense in the urbane environment I live in I really like the new Rover Evoque, but its a bit pricey and I’m still not sure of their long term reliability.
BTW LA Car Show this weekend, looking forward to getting to check out a few cars without the sales pressure at a dealership.
