Large Scale Central

Santa Fe Junction, Kansas City, MO derailment

Happened a couple hours ago, it looks like.

Bob, you will see what some of us have been going thru. when you paste a secure video url into the box, somehow it automatically changes to HTTP: when uploading. I have found that I can edit and add the “S” and it sticks. would be nice to not have to do the additional step.

That would be an unsettling cab ride!

Edit to remove the video I’d posted after I saw that Bob put up the same one. I think we were posting almost simultaneously about it. When I lived in KC that was a great place to watch trains. That bridge he was about to cross is double decked and double tracked on both decks. It is strong enough all 4 tracks can have a train on them simultaneously. The towers you see sticking up raise the bridge to prevent the Kansas River from destroying it when it floods.

That’s an amazing bridge.

If you are logged in on the HTTPS://largescalecentral.com web site there are no problems with embedding video.

Thanks Bob;

I wonder whether there was some weakness that allowed the outside rail to roll out from under the lead unit. You can see the outside rail beyond the bodies of several of the first autoracks. It is a good thing the train was running relatively slowly, or the motive power could have flipped off the bridge.

As a VR subscriber have been watching the thing on and off all day. Retrieval work began in earnest about 16:00
Derailment was around 07:48

Watching them swing this car between the booms to outboard end of cranes was something,

About 10 to 11 o’clock position from red location dot is where it happened, apparently right on the visible crossover,

Since my defective body is being difficult to get along with today I go 2 laods of laundry done and have otherwise been following this.

Following the chat all day Ive seen what seems to be a widespread expectation that the entire derailment will be, Should Be, resolved at either videogame speed, or by the end of a single prime time TV episode.

I’m not sure whether to label those expectations amusing or pathetic.

Maybe it can be both and instead of either or.

They have live streaming video of the cleanup that’s taking place.

WOW… (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)Thanks for the video.

There were two cameras showing what was going on. There are four cameras to look at. https://youtu.be/hNvU59Ld8aA When you are on the site click the white box at the bottom of the page. The one that looks kind of like a suitcase with arrows in it. It will bring up four live railcams in KC. You can then switch between them.

I frequently see the Virtual Railfan moderators & Nightbot say that mobile device users don’t get the icon and must use links in written description to switch.
