Ryan Equipment Company

Hi Y’all, I’m looking for a donor flatcar for a scratchbuilding project. About ten years ago, Ryan Equipment Company sold kits for 1/2" scale D&RGW steel flatcars. Anyone know where I might buy one? The plan is to build one of these ugly things:

Thank you, Matt Hutson Gunnison, CO

That’s not ugly. It’s Butt Ugly…which makes the best models…

Sorry I can’t help you on the flat car but congrats on breaking your silence. I see you have been a member for about a year and a half.

Warren,
I’m a big fan of keeping my mouth shut unless I have something to say.

Cheers,
Matt

That makes you a rarity around here Matt!

I was in Gunnison in late August on a cycle trip. Too bad I missed you.

Andre’

Now, Andre’, I resemble that remark…

Matt, there’s nothing wrong with being part of the nightly entertainment. Pay’s lousy though. I’ll have to talk to Bob about that…

Since you’re going to be scratching it anyway, why not build the whole thing? The flat car piece won’t be very hard to make out of styrene, and it will save you from compromising too much!

Bruce,
I am an essentially lazy modeler and would rather have a good starting point. Besides, I HATE doing rivets. But it may come to that…

Cheers,

You could start with a woodside boxcar, too.

Keep us up to date with pics as the project progresses.

Sounds like my philosophy as well.

Why start with a 1/2" scale flatcar that may or may not be available…you probably are modeling in 1:29, so you have two ways to go.

One way is to grab a USTrains or Aristo flat, and build using styrene sheet, and shapes on it.

The second way is to try and find an old USTRains, outside braced box car and bash it with styrene sheet and shapes. You should look for trucks other than archbars for this project, although you don’t want roller bearing trucks either; and if starting with a flatcar; look for ones with steel underframes, not trussrods.
…of course if you are into Narrow (Gauge) Mindedness…!!!
