Ruins in the mountains

To model the Grisons (Graubünden) aka the land of castles and strongholds, it is almost “mandatory” to include such a structure. Plenty of examples on Google.

I used styrofoam for the ruin of my glorified watchtower, add the stone work with the temp controlled soldering iron, then it gets coated with a special tiling cement - our renovators used the stuff and I got a big leftover gob to try and see how workable it is once it’s dry.

Still needs to be painted, but that’s an assembly line job to get the base colour and then do the highlighting of the stones.

That is going to look sweet! Did you apply the cement using a spray bottle/strainer or some other method?

Looks great Hans,

looks almost like you made it out of plaster. Gonna be cool looking when finished.

Nick

That looks really good and will be even better when painted up.

It reminds me of trips to Ireland where ruins like that can be seen when you drive around. many of them are old towers that now stand in farmers fields. Those old stone bones leave me wondering what was so important about that piece of land that such a structure was built?

I also wonder if the farmer thinks its neat or a nuisance that he needs to plow around.

I like your placement of the ruins. You will have to come up with a backstory about it for us.

Delightfully ruinous.

One thing I’ve always wonderd about ruins: Where are the stones that fell from the missing parts. Perhaps over the centuries people have carried them off for steps, foundations and the like?

That’s what happened at the location that was the inspiration. The town’s people used it as a convenient quarry.

Painted, ready to go in the garden (if the weather holds).

Spray painting and brush painting happened while the laser was running 1:22.5 restaurant tables. Never a dull moment.

Project done.

Nicely done!

I think I’ve seen that going from Chur to Filisur to stay at the hotel on the station platform.

Looks good, HJ.

I was thinking (yeah, it hurt) that you might add some vines or moss to show really advanced age. Just a thought.
