RS-3 kitbash finished! Pics & video!

My narrow gauge RS-3 kitbash is finally finished, after more than three months! It started out as a stock, 1/29th scale Aristocraft RS-3:

Here’s what it looks like now:

Here’s a YouTube video showing it in action on my In-ko-pah Railroad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJvAk3onISY And here are some more photos:

In addition to changing its appearance, I also installed an Aristocraft “Revolution” r/c receiver, a Phoenix PB9 sound board, and custom headlights. This project took a LOT longer than I’d expected but it was a lot of fun, and I learned a lot along the way. Now that’s it’s finished I feel much more confidant about my modeling abilities. There are a couple things I should have done differently. For instance, I didn’t realize until too late, that the headlights are only slightly higher than the top of the handrails. I should have made the hood a little taller, and maybe made the handrails a wee bit shorter. Also, the weathering was originally intended to be a bit more subtle, but I had trouble achieving a “slightly dusty/sooty” look using thin washes of acrylic paints. An airbrush would have been more effective. But the final, heavier weathering was easier to achieve, and turned out reasonably well. Many, many thanks to the folks on various forums who offered advice and tips, especially when it came to the electronics – an area where I am typically in over my head. (Step-by-step details of this project can be seen in this forum.) .

Really, really nice, Ray.

Next time I’m in Sandy Eggo, I want to see it!

She’s a beauty!

Beautiful work Ray. Great video and photos too.
I hope someday someone brings a stock RS-3 over for some side by side comparison shots

A beautiful locomotive… Very nicely done…

That looks very nice. Good job.

Really enjoyed the video Ray…nice work.

Great job Ray. Comparing the before and after shots you really did achieve a narrow gauge look. I love Alcos and you kept all the Alco flavor too.

That looks awsome. Love your layout

That looks great.

Great work Ray. That really came out nice

Thanks guys!

I’m hoping maybe I can find someone in our club who could bring over a stock RS-3 when we host the meeting in February.

Excellent job Ray.

Jon.

just perfect !

Very impressive job. Well done!!

Ray, I really like the weathering on that. Is that all paint, of did you use some of the weathering powders?

Bruce, it’s all paint except for the heavy, caked on “dust” on the trucks, pilot and underside. For that, I used ashes from our barbecue, sprinkled over wet paint, with a bit more thinned paint soaked into it.

Ray - whatever, it sure looks good - a lot better than the left out for 100 years look. A well maintained locomotive, but used.

Whoa, way better then the original!
But hey, we all expected that anyway, but it’s always nice to see by how much better and this ranks up there in the 1-10 range, of being over 10, so there ya go!
The kids will enjoy this tomorrow for sure!

hehe…md

Mark, did you see the video and hear how realistic it sounds?
